breeding How to Break the Record for the World’s Hottest Pepper

Here are genetic analyses that suggest that bhuts are geneticly different from Trinidadian peppers: https://journals.ashs.org/hortsci/view/journals/hortsci/42/2/article-p222.xml https://journals.ashs.org/horttech/view/journals/horttech/22/4/article-p534.xml

Max Nihil, cool idea about bringing in frutescens.  I had not heard of Lotah Bih.  After a quick Google I can see that a lot of people have made the connection between that strain and the ancestral bhut frutescens genes.  Very cool!

breeding How to Break the Record for the World’s Hottest Pepper

If anyone wants to join in this group experiment, let me know.  I am currently crossing Moruga from the Chile Pepper Institute and a Dorset naga from SeaSpring.  I also have some fatalii that I am going to bring in.  I have one pod that has stuck and is still ripening from my Moruga/Dorset...

    chinense Pepperlover`s Stuffing Scotch Bonnet

I just recently started 40 some varieties across annuum, baccatum, and chinense germinating and my stuffing bonnets were the first up!  Amazing!

    chinense Yellow Scotch Bonnets

Just tried my first MOA!  I liked it!  The only true Scotch I can compare it to is the one I've been calling the "Walton" Scotch (I got the seeds from a Jamaican immigrant neighbor of my parents who got it from his family but doesn't know more of a history on it).  The MOA (Steve Queen's) was a...

I thought all Scotches were annuum x chinense hybrids...(Like long ago, ancestrally.)

Definitely an annuum based on the flavor?  What's it like?

Scotches are the reason I'm growing peppers right now.  I grew maybe like 6 other varieties of peppers and didn't like any of them and was going to give up on peppers...and then...my Scotches ripened.  Now I'm obsessed with growing.

@Bicycle808, do let me/us know what you think of the "Walton" scotch - the good, the bad, how it compares, etc.   I'm in love with them, but haven't tried many Scotches to compare.

    chinense Yellow Scotch Bonnets

Holy complicated question.  For a seed to germinate it has to recognize that it’s time, trigger chemical reactions to switch from dormancy to growth, turn on a bunch of growth hormones, and a ton of processes to grow.  Any one of these hundreds of steps could have gotten buggered.  It's...

Those in-the-know, is TFM = to Trenton Farmer's Market?  I've heard both yes and no on this...

    chinense Yellow Scotch Bonnets

In related, tragic news, *&^%ing slugs keep eating my Scotch pods.  I picked one this morning that was rotting and stepped on it to get any slugs that might be inside of it and I could smell all of its Scotchy wonderfulness wafting up all the way from the ground.  Such a loss.

Wulp, it's sounding like I need to try some TFM!  Thanks for the input, Bicycle808 and FreeportBum!  Really cool (and shiny!) cross there, FreeportBum!  I'm a Scotch lover and am trying Scotch brain, MOA, and Freeport Orange this year.

flavor They kinda taste the same

It sounds like you've had some of the really good fruity and citrusy tastes.  You need to try something really floral then, like a (good) Trinidad scorpion or a devil's brain.  Then, try a good baccatum and pubescens.  Then try something smoky, like a chocolate hab.  They all taste different...

I have had two shipments of seeds from AliExpress confiscated by the USDA.  They send a note saying it has been done and why.

Woowoo!  Jeff, fresh pods a-comin' so open when you get it. :)  I'm going to message you the tracking.   "Any perishable items?  Fresh fruits or vegetables?"   "...No..." ;)

Walchit, you are awesome.  Really great job.  I am envious and have had plans for a long time to do some DIY (some day I will). I wouldn't hesitate on using green - it has better transmission than other wavelengths (deeper leaf and canopy penetration) and has been shown to boost growth when...
