    chinense That Habanero Smell!?

The Chinense skunk.  Tragically, it's dominating and off-putting to me . . . which makes it really hard to explore and appreciate properly varieties that interest me, such as brown Chinenses.   Trying Chinenses has sort of sensitized me to this compound, ester, aldehyde, sesquiterpene or...

flavor What's the most umami pepper you've tasted?

If umami is represented by anchovies, MSG, soy sauce, and tomatoes, I'm not sure I've found exact analogues in chiles.  However, I agree with that and would add Peruvian and Turkish dried pods, and likely many others.  Guajillo is one specific example, but in my experience, it must be dried to...

storage First Hard Freeze Tonight... Last Harvest 2018

Nice harvest, OP.     Even tougher when the dip is for just a night or three . . . after which, weeks' more of outdoor growing could be had . . . if the plants could be adequately protected.  So many green pods, man, and the plants have not looked better.    It's too hot for months of the...

Can someone help identify this new weed?

Eat it . . . and twist up some rope.  Looks like y'all don't want it in the corn patch, though.

Black Cobra / Goat's Weed – Ripening Progression

Yes . . . very.  Looks like a fun plant and pods.       OK.  I've been using the nomenclature of the seed sharer; he doesn't distinguish between BC and GW.  I'm absolutely open to reconsidering, though.   http://www.tradewindsfruit.com/content/goats-weed-pepper.htm...

    Use of Crab Apples

Crab apples, for jelly, are the only fruit I've tried that could almost rival mayhaws, so, there's that.

Poor substitute for fresh, but . . .       .   They were $4-5 a pound bag, frozen.

Premature Pod Drop and Incomplete Ripening — Inca Red Drop

To my surprise, I can't find any photos of Inca Red Drop.  What I recall them looking like is about like the Brazilian Pumpkin at the side of my feral-pear salad.     Full red is what I recall, along with more fruit in the flavour profile.   Maybe the plant will do better toward Fall.  If not...

    Aji Amarillo

Thanks for that.   Looks like it's almost all about the coast for Peruvian Ají Amarillo.  Seems to be a Goldilocks zone: mild, never freezes, perpetual Spring, (albeit a dry one).  No wonder they produce pods like mad.    (All of the guajillo pods I see in Hispanic-oriented grocery stores in my...

Premature Pod Drop and Incomplete Ripening — Inca Red Drop

Orange is the new red?   These are from a second or third-year plant.  In prior seasons, the fruit went to a full-on red stage . . . and remained on the plant.  None have gone past this colour this year, and numbers of pods are hitting the ground.   Flavour at this orange stage is OK, but it's...

    Aji Amarillo

Much like Pavlov's dogs, I started salivating at the sight of the Peruvian pile of ripe Ají Amarillo.  And they're growing them to the size of baby arms?   The discussion is informative.  My results with this variety have mirrored those of many others in the thread.   Does anyone know at what...

    Peach Congo (PL)

Pale-green/yeller is ripe for a "peach"?       Robust heat.  Mild/moderate Chinense "skunk", a level I'd compare approximately to Ají Mochero.  I'm tasting a touch of bitter and no sweetness.   Pairs well with pumpkin eggnog.
