2 vs. 3-way Branching

Just something I noticed the other day, a few of my pepper plants upon first beginning to branch out from the main stem form three stems at the node offset by 120 degrees rather than two offset by 180. I've only noticed it in the annuums so far. After that they appear to divide normally.

Is this just a quirk of their growth or a genetic trait? Anyone know if it makes a difference in yield?
