8Planets 2012 Glog: Dedicated to My Newborn Pepper

Hello everybody -

I am new to this forum, and so far my time on it has been exciting. Not long after signing off from my first visit on 05/03, my wife went into labor and hours later we were blessed with the birth of our first child - my daughter Pepper Ann. Why did we choose Pepper for her name? Well, there are several reasons: first, whether spice or vegtable, hot or sweet, fresh, smoked, or sauce - peppers make good food great and are amazing by themselves; second, I have always loved growing a wide variety of them, leading me to specialize in them as a market gardener (and tomatoes, but that would be a less-appealing name); third, we fell in love with the name Pepper after watching the movie Iron Man and had read Iron Man comics back in the day.

But there were so many other great names we had on the short list, and while Pepper was leading the pack, we were still ultimately undecided as we weathered the pre-delivery contractions. Then fate (or coincidence) happened: as we passed the time flipping through television channels, we saw part of a one-hour Food Network special on cooking with peppers and also happened upon one of our favorite scenes in Iron Man. While we thought this was cool, it only became official after watching her birth, and it just felt right.

So, as the growing season and farmer's markets kick into high gear, I want to dedicate my 2012 glog to my sweet Pepper Ann. This thread will include pictures and discussions of my hydroponic methods (some are traditional, while others are experimental), my attempts to enter the world of competitive gardening, as well as the trials and tribulations of my exciting year of market gardening and starting a family.

I hope one day I'll make her proud...

So the baby and the business has kept me plenty busy, but I now have a moment to start updating my 2012 progress...

A few months ago I started my peppers (20+ varieties) in either rockwool cubes or a peat+perlite mix, the former for hydro and the latter for eventual transplanting into the ground.

Approximately 30 of my superhots (bhut jolokia, naga morich) & faves (orange habs, pequin, etc) were transplanted into 4" delta blocks and are being grown indoors in a 4' x 8' flood and drain (FAD) table. Here is an early snap shot, closely-spaced and covered with black/white poly...

From here, the seedlings go to a few different places. Some will proceed to a DWC setup for further development, also this picture on my back patio is being used for an article accepted for the August issue of Maximum Yield, and I typically bring a single DWC system to the farmers markets to strike up conversations about hydroponics and peppers...

Or the peppers go to aeroponic systems - totes or buckets - for further development and also as functional displays at farmers markets.

Some go into soilless plantings; I like to vary both container size and substrate based on its use. For some houseplants (quasi-bonsai), I plant them into old, plastic coffee containers. For the farmers market this year, I was tapped to provide all the peppers (6 types) and tomatoes for a salsa demonstration the organizers are putting on - these peppers went into 5 gallon buckets with different mixes: peat+perlite, peat+growstones, growstones+perlite. (I've never used growstone until this season, but the company contacted me and offered me a couple cubic feet to run some trials - excited to see how it works out.) Some I grow on my patio that always stay near the grill/kitchen for fresh ingredients - pequin!

The majority are being transplanted into a FAD tube system in the greenhouse. No pics of this yet, but here is what the spring lettuce looked like:

Last, and definitely least, the remaining peppers go into the ground. Unfortunately, I was lulled into believing it would be safe to transplant into the great wide open during the record heat spell we had in March, only to suffer two freezing nights in a row (the ONLY two nights it froze here in March!)...So, the hydro is going to have to take me home this year!!!

BTW, first farmers market of the season was this past Saturday; modest sales due to the weather and my earlier crop failure, but great interest in hydro was shown (selling a couple custom systems) and got two guys to shed tears from my peppers!!!

More to come later - hope you enjoy this first round of the season...

Thanks 8Planets,

I will be following your glog closely since you use many methods to get maximum yields from your type of plants, including peppers. Let the fun begin...

Ghosty...

Very interesting, 8planets. Will be fun watching you do your grow.
