Hi and welcome from western Massachusetts. Lots of folks here that love to cook with heat that are willing to share what they know. What did the peppers look like that you got from your Italian friend? Do you have any pictures? In addition to a number of varieties of Cayenne pepper, I know of the larger Corno de Toro, round cherry peppers and the wrinkled, yellow Pepperoncini that are grown in Italy. Pictures would probably help someone here identify what you're looking for. Cheers!
