If anyone is interested in joining us in Growdown 2025, get familiar with the rules in past threads and comments. Pretty straightforward stuff here.
Ají Dulcecito
In 2018, Jen and I traveled to Costa Rica together for the first time (my second trip). On that journey, we ran the route I used for my first visit. San Jose to Arenal/La Fortuna then down to Punta Arenas for the Ferry to Mal Pais/Santa Teresa. As you make your way into the Arenal area you notice the biome change and start to see a lot of farming activity. Anyway, while in La Fortuna/Arenal I swung through all the usual spots. Little tiendas with no google maps listings, the larger super mercados, and the small bicycle fruit stands that often pop up at random. This one Capsicum annum I kept seeing stood out... it's label simply read "Aji Dulce" or the seller would call them "Aji Dulcecito". Obviously one of the many Pimiento varieties throughout Central and South America. I've enjoyed growing and eating them for several seasons since that trip. Non bitter like many "Bell" types. If people want to give these a go and will adhere to the entry requirements, I'll supply them.
How they would generally look in Costa Rica, (top left sitting on passports):
And how they look for me when I grow them in 15 gallon bags:
If you are interested in actually participating and posting continued updates throughout the season, send me a private message for the SASBE address. Past participants get first consideration.
- All same genetics from same supplier.
- Seeds sown no sooner than Jan 1 2025. Sow as many seeds as you like.
- Choose your plant. If the plant ends up being the wrong genetics/hybrid etc, it's disqualified, so sow them all, cull to standard.)
- Grow the plant with ANY GROW METHOD you think will win.
- Each harvest pull must be weighed and proven with photos or videos. If you lie, we will know.
- Which ever grower can yield the MOST WEIGHT off their chosen SINGLE PLANT, by Dec 31 2025 is crowned Growdown Throwdown King.
- No seed snipers. All participants MUST SEND SASBE to the seed supplier and then PARTICIPATE in the contest, updates etc. Canadian contestants will be distributed to by @Bou If you send sasbe and then don't participate, we come find you and make you pay. It's bad. Don't do it.
