An extract by any other name would still burn as heat

Whenever I find myself in the hot sauce aisle at the local markets, I do make an attempt to read the labels for the ingredients being used.

Usually I try to stay away from hot sauce products that have vinegar listed as any of the first three ingredients, and prefer that vinegar, if it is used, is one of the last ingredients listed.

But mostly when I am reading the ingredients on the label, I am looking to see if any pepper extract has been used.

As a rule, I try not to buy hot sauces that have pepper extract listed in the ingredients.

But since I'm still fairly new to hot sauces, I've noticed some different names being used for the extra heat being added in the form of extracts.

Some of the different names I've come across on labels are: pepper extract, oleoresin, African oleoresin, natural African oleoresin, pepper flavoring, natural pepper flavoring and capsicum oil.

With all of the different names, it can get a bit confusing, and to be honest, I'm not 100% sure that all of the names I have listed above are actually pepper extracts, but I suspect that they might be.

Have any of you seen any other names for pepper extract being used on labels?

I was wondering why so many different names are being used for these added extracts?

Any type of oleoresin is an extract with a "nasty" chemical flavor or "tang" to it....natural pepper flavoring could just be a flavor additive, capsicum oil would also be an extract.....Everybody likes to call it something different....

Capsicum oil is probably just plain old chilli oil.... i.e. oil that has been heated and infused with chillies. There should be no chemicals involved in the production of it.

I don't know about any other countries but in Australia we call our bell peppers "capsicums". Perhaps capsicum oil is just a bell pepper infused oil used for added flavour?

EDIT:

Hmmm, looks like I may be wrong.... after a quick Google, I've discovered that some commercial chilli oils do contain extracts.
