baccatum Baccatum Suggestions?

I'm coming in on the last of my 2025 grow list, and am missing any baccatums. I've contemplated doing a baccatum trial next year, but I might have room for 1 or 2 of them in a raised bed this year. I haven't grown many baccatums, never really catching the spark, but I do have to say that the Sugar Rush Peach that I grew this past year was very good. So I may throw in a baccatum or two this year to get a jump on my trial. A few that crossed my mind as possibilities are Aji Rico (because of its reputed earliness, I know nothing about its flavor), Aji Mango (sounded like a good one one), and Aji Chinci Amarillo. If I don't grow these this year, they will definitely go into the rotation next year, so I'm not married to the idea of growing one of these in 2025. If you could only pick one or two baccatums for my garden this year, what would they be? It doesn't have to be one of the aforementioned ones! Flavor and earliness are my primary qualities to consider, especially the latter since I'm in NJ, zone 7a.

Many thanks for your recommendations!!

Yep. I was planning to recommend considering aji guyana even before seeing your post, ahayastani. Solid all around and the earliest baccatum I've grown.

Dogville is zone 9a, but despite our warmer winters, we don't get the heat units / GDG during the growing season. New Jersey locations will be significantly higher in GDG than here and have warmer nights during the season as well.

I have managed to grow these successfully here in southern Quebec so they will ripen in time for you down south!

Aji Fantasy white
Aji Habanero yellow
Aji Ahuachapan
Sugar Rush Amarillo

Sounds delicious!
They really are Boss! I purchased my seeds from The Hippy Seed Comapny. My fruits seem a little bigger and the shape doesn't exactly match those of Jukka. I have been growing it since 2022 and I haven't seen any changes between seasons so I assume this variety is stable...

@Bou dude I love the thick flesh for that size pepper, you don't get that with chinense, looks like you might need to pickle some slices!

They are so good fresh, I can't resist munching on one everytime I get out to see how my other peppers are ripening!(=often when I'm around!). I do like your pickling idea though 👌

Besides, I know of a at least 3 other thick-fleshed C. chinense. Look at them walls!

Not my photo but it speaks for itself:

The thickness of this last one varies from pod to pod but is still larger than most other C. chinense.

True! Thick-walled is important for pickling if you are going to slice them imo. That Barrackpore looks decent but I really like the overall look of that Sugar Rush, Amarillo!

@Bou @CaneDog @ahayastani @Marturo thank you for the suggestions so far! They all look interesting! I'd like to look further into Aji Guyana. Looks like Refining Fire Chiles and Bohica Pepper Hut are two sources that have a few of these choices (including Aji Guyana). Would you recommend getting from there, or are there other commercial sources that you acquired yours from?
I can't complain about the quality of the seeds from any of them. One thing I have to mention is that Bohica never responded to my messages (emails, bot that was on the website at that time and even a phone message) and even though what I purchased grew ok, the complete lack of customer service is a big red flag for me, so I won't order from there ever again. RFC has some haters out there but again, I ordered just once and got what I paid for... As long as you stay away from Amazon, eBay, ETSY and other shady store/individuals you should be good!

I received seeds from CaneDog himself, about half a decade ago, when the postal system was still dysfunctional and not utterly kaputt. An international vendor (🇵🇹) that also offers ají guyana is FoxPeppers. In past orders, I communicated with them using FB. Germination and communication are good.

Wow @Bou those are beautiful! Also, thank you for the info on the seed companies.

Thank you for the resource, I'll check it out.

@NJChilehead if you grow the Amarillo I will buy pods off you.

WHAT?! This is the best pepper community in the world-no way I would charge you for pods! If I successfully grow it, you're getting some too as my way of saying thank you!

My seeds originally came from a forum member, though I do have some fresh isolated seeds from an aji guyana pepper that ripened indoors just a month or two ago.

If i could only grow 2, I'd go with more popular varieties like Aji Amarillo and Aji panca. These are staple peppers for Peruvian cooking. Downfall is Aji Amarillo takes 365 days to ripen.

Aji Mango is a solid choice all around, it has good flavor, super productive and ripens earlier than many other baccatums. I feel Aji Guyana has the same qualities but I have limited experience with this pepper. Aji Guyana is on my grow list this year thanks to Canedog of course.
