Best thing to do when it's -20 outside...

Hey musky, if you're reading this I swear I'm going to post some ice fishing pics next week and try to make this a respectable place for you to post pics of your ice castle.

Here's what this thread will look like next week

There's not much to post yet. So far, it's just a rolling frame that's ready for paint.

I've been gathering stuff like crazy though... heater, stove/oven, windows, door, lights...

I hope to have a functional house in the next couple weeks.

Here's a picture from Hoth, from the last time I went fishing there.

My buddies and I rented a Red lake ice cabin for the upcoming weekend. Sitting around on a warm couch in sweatpants and slippers while drinking heavily, playing a cribbage tournament and grooving to some radio Havana while it's -10 outside where the brats are grilling should make for a fun weekend.
Also, we will be ice fishing.

I'm back from Hoth (Red lake) where my brother and friend and I spend a couple of nights in an ice cabin. The cold weather has the fish really lethargic, so we weren't expecting much. We caught just enough for a delicious multi-species fish fry (I landed another wally after dinner, so I got to take one home too.) Mr. Spotty also made an appearance!

Here's dinner. That one hogdogger is that fattest fucking wally I've ever seen. She's only 16.5", but fatter than a beer can!

Yeah, this is totally the dude you want to see cooking fish in a big pot of 370o oil on a gas stove. In a (most likely very flammable) camper 6 miles out on a lake when it's -10 ouside.

(You can tell by the slightly inebriated look on my face that I'm doing it right.)

Here's the finished product. Nice white, flaky wally. Ikejime, FTW!

We were fishing mostly with dead sticks, taking a round-robin approach when we got a bite. My brother was busy cooking pancakes for breakfast on Sunday when he noticed a nibble on my ultralight panfish rod. He felt a fish and set the hook and the look on his face told me he hooked something bigger than that noodle rod was intended for.

This fish was caught on a panfish rod with 6lb nano braid line and a 6lb fluoro leader! :metal:

If you look really close at the fish's upper lip this pic, you can see the tiny 1/16 oz. jig that held the minnow that this northern mistakenly ate. It was a one-in-a-million shot that he got hooked on the outside of his lip. If that leader had had any contact with that monster's teeth, things would've ended a lot differently.

Our first stay in an ice cabin was a blast. More wally action would've been nice, but you never know what the bite's going to be like when you have to book your stay long in advance. Even though we caught little more than one (big) fish fry's worth of fish, landing that northern ensured that we had plenty to talk about while we were busy not catching anything.

My buddy and I were on the school all day yesterday. Now that it's after noon, I can get to work filleting them. Because cleaning fish without beer is like fishing without beer.

A crap load of crap-pies! It was one of those days when you poke some holes, check the depth with the flasher, see a school and land a keeper before you even set up the shelter. Those guys were hungry and competitive!
