BrandonB's 2019 glog!!

Wanted to wait until some signs of life were showing before starting the glog, and here we are.

Will be an outdoor container grow in humid north Florida. Will probably end with at least 10 cultivars.

Hopefully the heat and pests will be kind to me this season!!

Without further ado some 7 pot choccy and sepia serpent that are just starting their lives! Will be putting about 5 more varieties into towels tonight!!   Also i apologize for the terrible quality, im a shaky fella and my phone is rather poor.  

(How long do you guys usually let radicles go before putting into medium?)

I let some go until the cotys pop out, it seems like they don't stall out if you put them in when they look like a hook on the paper towel, but not all of them sprout that way. At least in my experience. I like doing them when they shed the helmet cause then the trays end up being more uniform. I still end up with some stragglers though.

If you plant them when they just have radicle make sure you keep the humidity up with a dome or something. I've been covering individual cells with pieces of plastic I cut from some ramkin lids. I only put those on the ones without cotys, and leave them until they come up. Helmet head surgery is harder when they are in the soil too.

That's just the way I do it there are plenty of different techniques.

@walchit I think I'm going to take your advice and hold off on sowing these. I'll get better rates and less hassle as you said.

As for the glog I added the rest of the first batch to their moist towelettes.

They do pretty good either way, I did notice if I left them for a few days after the cotys come out they curl up weird when I plant them, or one even flopped over, but I think it eventually came back. I try to get them right when the seed is about to come off. Some times it will pull off, other times I break off half the cotys lol.

You have some great varieties on your list,
nothing wimpy about those!
 
As for transplanting, I like to get the root into
soil as soon as possible. Once the radicle is
1/4" long or so, it is in 'go' mode and will root
in well. But, follow Andy's advice in post #2.

Either way will work just one. There is less chance of root breakage if you do it the way Paul said. Just keep the humidity up till they pop

The list is starting to scare me heat wise, maybe I'm just anxious!!

Keeping a keen eye on them, I'm in Florida so my humidity is usually a not a problem for sprouts. Will try to keep it as moist as possible though and keep everyone updated on progress!!

Also I've been wondering how long you guys go before first feeding? Or if you're using medium with nutes from the start?

I start in seedling mix and don't usually feed until I pot my plants up, but chinense is super slow going and wonder if that will be too long of a wait? How prone to burning are these usually? I figure they aren't dramatically different from annuums but I'd like to be sure.

Ferts are all organic so nothing too aggressive if that makes a difference.

up to full strength when they have a couple of more leaves. Once they leave
the cups after six weeks or so, then I get there nutes in play, as well - Silica
Blast, More-Bloom, Cal-Mag, Kelp (last two foliar)
 
I like Alaska Fish Fertilizer cuz it's mostly organic and doesn't burn plants.

Ok good to know, i use a large assortment of meals ive picked up over the years as a side dress and tea. (feather, kelp, bat guano, fish bone/blood, alfalfa, crab)  Then ive had good success late season with seabird/gull guano.  I think my current batch is 0-20-0 which i love for flowering.
 
  Ive never had any problems with burning in any plants and will feed these as soon as we get true leaves as usual.

Top pic is a 7 pot chocolate that's the furthest ahead, and the second is sepia serpent.



Next set of seeds should be putting out some tails soon.

I've only had a couple seeds go all full cotys-out in the coffee filter/paper towel, but it does give you a nice, visible, helmet-free start. I usually let them get 2-3 cm of root going and transplant, then keep them under a makeshift humidity dome until they're up and established.

I'm having pretty good luck letting them go about 3/8 of an inch.

A few reapers from pepperjoes are showing tails, they'll hit starter mix within 2 days. (What's everyone's experience with these? I plan to give a bunch away to family.)

Adding one more strain out of the ones in the pic but idk what to choose.Any recommendations?

Pepper socks from the wife for Valentine's!!!

All of my first batch of sepia and 7pot chocolate have emerged. Hit them with a super light dose today as they will be in this mix for a little while.

Let my seed towels get a little dryer than I would like, think I'm OK though. 3/10 reaper seeds have tails, and nothing else showing as of yet from the whitehot batch. Though I don't expect anything for a day or two. Gonna throw my third batch of seeds into towels tomorrow, some bhuts and haven't decided what else. Will update later in the week
