That is the gnarliest pod I've ever seen... looks like a face. I don't care what color it is, I can't wait to get the brown bhutlah slp seeds I ordered last week if they grow out like that.Scorched said:Here's one of my Bhutlah SLP. Seems more caramel. Got mine as plants from Jim Duffy but he got his seeds from Semillas. The one plant has these gnarly caramel pods. The other plant's pods aren't as gnarly and don't have color yet

Left is Black Bhutlah and right ist Chocolate Bhutlah from crazyhotseeds.com that turned out to be a
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia
Also the Black Bhutlah turns mahagony red if fully ripe.
You must know that the brown color is a mixture of chlorophyll green and carotenoid red. Under full sun the chlorophyll gets destroyed and red color comes up.

As someone involved in R&D for color cosmetics (Covergirl,Max Factor), I can tell you no green + red will yield a brown. Also, for chlorophyll to be destroyed would necessitate the chloroplasts being broken, which would cause the physical structure of the peppers to collapse (which isn't happening). There is a black pigment present, or the peppers would be purple. Docsemillas said:Yes.... our brown Bhutlah turns red if fully ripe as turn most of the brown varieties under subtropical sun.

Pods that get more sunlight turn to red much earlier.
Could depend on light and elevated temps. We have constant daytime temps of around 30-32°C = 86-90F since many weeks and most time no clouds
Some C. annuum, like Chile de Onza and Chilhuacle Negro stay dark brown and don´t get red
