Taste is like bhut , but is much. much hotter.

You can see the color difference. From left :Black Naga .  Brown BhutlahSLP  Bubblegum  Jay Peach

Here's one of my Bhutlah SLP. Seems more caramel. Got mine as plants from Jim Duffy but he got his seeds from Semillas. The one plant has these gnarly caramel pods. The other plant's pods aren't as gnarly and don't have color yet

That is the gnarliest pod I've ever seen... looks like a face. I don't care what color it is, I can't wait to get the brown bhutlah slp seeds I ordered last week if they grow out like that.

Yes.... our brown Bhutlah turns red if fully ripe as turn most of the brown varieties under subtropical sun.

Left is Black Bhutlah and right ist Chocolate Bhutlah from crazyhotseeds.com that turned out to be a
Chocolate Bhut Jolokia

Also the Black Bhutlah turns mahagony red if fully ripe.
You must know that the brown color is a mixture of chlorophyll green and carotenoid red. Under full sun the chlorophyll gets destroyed and red color comes up.

Both the black and brown slp are absolutely beautiful Peter. They will both continue to be in my grow each year. Just got my Black seeds from Puckerbutt CP collection. Finally have my seed permit so will be doing some ordering from you this Fall.

A couple more Brown Bhutlah SLP I pulled a couple days ago

As someone involved in R&D for color cosmetics (Covergirl,Max Factor), I can tell you no green + red will yield a brown. Also, for chlorophyll to be destroyed would necessitate the chloroplasts being broken, which would cause the physical structure of the peppers to collapse (which isn't happening). There is a black pigment present, or the peppers would be purple. Doc

Interesting, I am always learning something on this forum.

So, brown pods will turn red? Is that only, as you say; 'under subtropical sun' or will this also occur in temperate climates (I am in Zone 6A)?

When you say 'most of the brown varieties', does that refer to any C. Chinense? Or only to specific cultivars?

Regarding the CrazyHotSeeds Chocolate Bhutlah; I grew those this year, and I will agree they are indistiguishable from the Chocolate Bhut Jolokia that I bought from RefiningFireChiles. Oh well, live and learn, I only spent $11.45 with CrazyHotSeeds, not an expensive lesson by any means, and the last of my money they will ever see.

I see this effect with nearly all brown varieties of C. chinense
Pods that get more sunlight turn to red much earlier.
Could depend on light and elevated temps. We have constant daytime temps of around 30-32°C = 86-90F since many weeks and most time no clouds

Some C. annuum, like Chile de Onza and Chilhuacle Negro stay dark brown and don´t get red

I never experienced that, probably because I get impatient and pick them as soon as they are 'ripe'.

I am going to leave some of my Brown Large Scorpion pods on the plant in direct sun and see what happens.

Of course, in my area, weather conditions tend to be somewhat inconsistent, especially this time of the year. So, if temperature and sunlight are a factor, I might not have them turn red, correct?
