pubescens Capsicum pubescens pot size..........

I've only dabbled with Capsicum pubescens for a couple of years I see them as a free "outdoor bonus" crop here in Scotland my greenhouse is for the hotstuff only

I grow them outside and really ignore them ! kind of Darwins "survival of the fittest" let's face it to thrive and ripen fruit during Scottish summer you need to be tough.

As I've become more and more captivated by these chillies both by the beauty, flavour and indeed ĥeat i have started to put more thought into growing them. I selected Rocoto Long from sea spring seeds as the toughest from my first outdoor trial.

This season even though to date I found Rocoto Long (pretty sure a selection of Aji Largo) to do best in my short season with its cool/cold/damp Scottish summer conditions I have decided to tial a small number of new Rocotos. This in turn has lead me to research more and look at other idea's such as hydroponics, hanging baskets and "Ideal" pot size to help get the most out of them ...........

This brings me to pot size...... I noticed the other day sea spring seeds recommend pots of 10 litre to 15 litres pots

Fatalii seeds recommend around a 10 litre pot for there Rocotos except Rocoto Montufar were they 15 litre to 20 litre pots

As we know Rocotos will grow into trees in there native habitat and the need a long season being slow growers, here in lays the problem the bigger the pot the bigger and longer they will grow and of course take longer to produce and ripen

Here's one of my Rocoto Long in a pot bigger than 10 litres......15 litre possibly 20 litre this was beginning of October 2024 as you see plenty of fruit but nothing ripe yet ! It was a particularly bad year litte sun and lots of cloud. Moving it into the greenhouse helped .........

Here's another Rocoto Long but left to its wild sprawling nature photo 27th August 2024 pretty sure it's a 40 litre pot this plant is Gorgeous .......but definitely took way way longer to produce fruit and certainly longer to ripen even though I was in a sheltered sun trap...not that we had much sun

This season I'm going to stick to10 litre pots "MAX" probably even with my Montufar it will be interesting to see the results.

Last year I chickened out trying an outdoor kratky Rocoto..... however this year it's game on ! Could be very interesting...........

Berry size of the pubescens you grow will determine how soon you are picking and how many you are picking. I would take much of what you see on the Fatalii site as him fellating himself and not properly educating potential buyers. Said individual gave them names like hyper and turbo pube. Any small berried pubescens is going to be more prolific than large ones. Generic names just make it harder to track the legitimacy of plants.

What you have pictured there are medium to small and should be very productive regardless of container size. I agree with you that larger vessels equal later picking dates and where I garden,it is silly to attempt to grow them in the ground. The container sizes you have chosen are perfectly fine. You can certainly grow fantastic plants in containers this size. They just will need more attention.
