Carolina Reaper (HP22B) Community Grow

A few members including myself are growing seeds for this variety ASAP. I and a few others here on THP thought it would be fun to have a "community glog" strictly for this variety, a fun thread about the HP22B and growing this pepper for the first time.

I think we should start a community glog like this anytime there is a new pepper with alot of attention and alot of people growing it, possible world record holder or not. It would be fun, and this should be fun! That's why we all love this hobby is it not?

Therefore, this will be a drama-free, controversy-free, fun glog for all of us growers and others to enjoy. If you grow, please chime in. If you're growing this variety, please post pictures and chime in about your observations.

Again.. This thread is ment to be fun and informative, but mostly fun :)
Please. Pretty please with sugar on top.. lol. Keep it drama-free.
I, and many others would really appreciate this thread to stay that way.

Now lets get to growing!

I went with the paper towel method for this guy just like I have with all my mid-season starts. It is far from my favorite way to germinate seeds but I'm in no hurry this time of year which is why I went this route. I've had the seeds in the paper towel for about a week now on top of my HOT5 lighting closet. The seeds should be showing root tips soon, then they will be visiting some real soil :D

How's it going for everyone else?

i saw that too the other day.  Pod shapes, color, and size may vary.  Looks like a scam to me.

My last statement (2 weeks ago) was that all the plants, I have, look the same, but I must correct this.

I´m growing 40 plants
19 have set pods where 21 are junger and will need some more time to set fruit
1 plant has brown pods
1 plant has large red pods double of the size of the brown with the same smooth surface
1 plant has pods that look like a long Naga

Peter
looks like a chocolate habanero.

I don´t think it´s a scam.

He tried his very best, but he failed.
paraphrasing you:

But he sold his failure @ the price of the "very best" :D ... Donno if that's scam or just not quite "100 percent compliance"

One interesting thing I noticed is that the description on pepperjoe's website regarding the carolina reaper changed shortly after all the drama about pod shapes started in this thread. They added the line "Pod shapes, color & size may vary"

I just pulled up old versions on the wayback machine out of curiosity when I noticed that the current site mentions the variation in pod color.
hahahahahah

HMM - so now they are also advertising it as "Organic" - wonder if they have the proper USDA documentation to use "organic" in their advertising ?

Jim Duffy  Really most of us know the Capsicum chinense genus does not throw 100% consistency in pod formation.

Sorry to be pedantic, but things like this kill me.  Capsicum is the genus and chinense is the species.  When used together as "Capsicum chinense" it does not refer to the genus, it refers to the species.

Back to the discussion at hand...;)

Pepperjoe.

I bought 3 packages of seeds and gave away all but 8-10 seeds to members here. I sowed 5 and had 4 germinate. I am having an issue that I haven't seen anyone else have. The vigor of my plant is not up to my standards. Everything else in the same plot is going off but my Reaper has always been a bit deficient. I have given it special treatment but nothing has changed. It is producing and flowering but it is not from a good line IMO. I will not be saving seeds from it.

See John mine are opposite. My reapers are leaps and bounds ahead but I am getting smooth and elongated pods. Hmmmmmmm. I wonder if that is more or less the case for everyone.

who did you buy from?

Didn't buy.  I received 2 packs in from a contest and they were repackaged so I have no idea.  One plant is small and producing what I believe will end up being the gnarly pods but they are still too small to know for sure.

I imagine there are a ton of seed mix ups involved with all of this. Think of how many people traded these before ever growing them. As I said above,I am guilty of doing the same. I bought extra to share with friends. You don't really know how picky other folks are.

If mine didn't grow proper,I still wouldn't have felt duped. I was aware of the parties involved and really wasn't expecting a lot. I also don't believe any of this stuff is stable. F8 or whatever gen, there hasn't been a lot of time since the breakout of a lot of these. How many varieties does CARDI have stabilized for comnercial production? Ten or less I think. I see a small handful of groups making the efforts, and oddly enough it's not for monetary gain.
