auction Charity Auction

First, to the moderators, I did not know the best place to put this so feel free to move it if you wish.

Normally when I have a bad day, I find that doing something charitable instantly makes me feel better. The worse my day is, the bigger my charitable effort has to be to cancel it out. Even something as simple as leaving an extra big tip for my meal works for most days. Yesterday was an especially tough day both at work and at home.

Last night, I made a big bid on Silver_Surfer's 7 Pot auction with the intention of giving away all the seed from those beautiful peppers. Then I realized that just giving away seeds probably wasn't going to be enough to make up for the utter disaster that was my day. I decided to make an even bigger bid with the intent that part of the money go to a charity. Unfortunately, and to nobody's fault, communication could not happen quickly enough for the agreement on the terms of the bid to be decided.

I literally lost sleep over the issue last night, but while I laid there staring at the ceiling I came up with another plan. I want to do a charity auction! My plan is to put together a variety box this weekend and auction it off on Monday, Aug 13th. The box will contain fresh pods, seeds from my isolated plants, dried pods and powders. I also plan to match the selling price of the box 100% and double the contribution.

So there are some details to work out, which I am asking everyone's opinion on.
  1. Specific Charity - I want to make as big of an impact as possible, so I need to find a charity that will draw the support of the biggest crowd and please as many people as possible. That means it is going to have to be a charity that doesn't involve politics, religion, etc. The charity should also have a good rating, I do not want the money going to a charity that has a 90% overhead. Let's make this count!
  2. Donation - Would members find it more enticing if the contribution was made in their name, or in the name of someone of their choosing, or in the name of the THP as a whole?
  3. Auction Length - I have seen auctions that have been for anything from several hours to several days and I don't know what works best.
I am also going to approach the other vendors here and see if we cannot get some more auctions and more charities involved. I think it would be great to see some of the other, non-vendor pod auctions go this way as well!

Please leave me some feedback as I would like to get this all finalized in the next couple of days.

Yes, being a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom myself, I like to give to veteran charities. I am also an animal lover so I give a lot to the local animal shelters. I am open to all types of charities, but I definitely want it to be something everyone can get behind

,my father in law was fort myers chapter president for 10 years and still hosts fundraisers. its really good and legit. they do a lot of good.

I wish you would have won!

I wish I would have too, but it isn't going to matter. I am still going to win by doing something good as a result. Hopefully through this auction everybody will win something.

?can i bid on your auction thanks,

Look, I am not going to stop anyone from bidding on the auction. This auction is going to be about the charity. On the other hand, if ANYONE, is bidding in this auction in order to ultimately make a personal monetary gain then that is just poor form. This is about giving and not taking. Do as you wish, but just know that if you are going to MAKE money from this auction, well then, the universe has its ways of leveling the playing field and karma always comes back to you.

My vote: Operation Homefront...

My vote is for THP: "Forum members" listed as the donator...

GPS,

I agree, just thought I would quote you for emphasis added:

Rhody...

I definitely agree with making a donation in the name of the forum. There are a lot of giving people here, and yes we give to one another on the daily, I think its time we do something outside of the pepper world, together.

I am planning on doing the same thing for a local charity Angel City Pit Bulls and my goal this year is to get them double of everything on their Amazon wishlist for the rest of the year. Good luck with the auction and charity you decide to support.

great idea ghostpepperstore - I've actually done a couple of charity auctions already, and will be doing some more in the near future. I have a couple of causes near and dear to me. The last I did was to help a bait dog who was rescued from a dogfighting ring, and the next one will be to spay/neuter a rescue dog at the 2nd chance program that rescued my pup (likely kick that off this weekend).

I also donated a LDHS gift package to a testicular cancer auction/fundraiser and I send hot sauce care packages to the middle east on a monthly basis through www.anysoldier.com

If you put an auction together and figure out a cause I'll kick in a 3-pack of sauce and a LDHS t-shirt. Retail value $30

I will most definitely be doing the auction, that part is already decided. Very happy to have you aboard! That is a very generous offer.

I actually recieved many care packages from AnySoldier while I was deployed to Iraq. Getting those care packages is an amazing feeling, of course it would have been even better if I had ever gotten hot sauce in any of them, but I guess you weren't around back then.

I am really leaning towards Operation Homefront for this first auction. SicMan's suggestion is a good one too, they both score very high in the "Charity Navigator Ratings". I like Operation Homefront because they are all inclusive whereas "special operations warrior foundation" focuses on SpecOps families. Both are very deserving, and I will get around to doing something for both of them if I can.

to large importers of peppers give some back to the india farmers and workers.

I buy all of my ingredients in my home state. 70% of them come from within 100 miles.

So all due respect, but I'd rather buy locally and support my own economy than donate to India for a problem I'm not causing in the 1st place.

Support your local farmers.

I love hearing that - I find it amazing that I've sent distributors and reviewers in the US "samples" and never even got a thank you, likely as they considered it buasiness and forgot that there was a small businessman spending money to send them free hot sauce and courtesy should still apply, but meanwhile without fail 95% of the care packages I've sent have resulted in a thank you note. I am touched every single time, especially when I consider the conditions some of these folks live in.

the most impressive example was a sniper unit in Afghanistan - these guys were living in the mountains, in caves and coming down for missions - and 3 of the guys in the unit took the time to write me a thank you note.

ironically it is I who owe them all my thanks, which is in part why I do it. I hear LDHS makes MREs taste a hell of a lot better and they get enough socks, so I'll keep sending a package a month as long as I'm in business.

She was attempting to dig at me because I import some of the smoked peppers from India. I am not going to defend it cause I don't really see the issue. As soon as someone in the US can produce the same quality product at a competitive price I will purchase from them. Unfortunately that has not happened yet.

Like my signature says, don't feed the trolls!

Maybe Alabamagirl will be the producer you are looking for in the US, to support US products.

See how nice things can work out.

This really isn't the place to discuss this. This thread is about the charity auction and how to make it best for everyone. If you are not going to provide input on the way the auction is run, then please refrain from posting. Thanks.
