plant Chilli plant bought in Brazil - insanely hot

Heya all. Thanks for the add to this forum. I bought this plant 2 days ago in Brazil. It had no label and was in a supermarket. I cut a few peppers open yesterday to add to a dish I was cooking. Immediately just on cutting them I started to choke on the fumes as my throat closed up. These were extremely, extremely, exceptionally hot to eat . Of course I was stupid and itched my nose... another hour of pain! Any idea what species it is? Is it an ornamental chilli plant of some kind? I have attached some photos. Cheers in advance.

That's awesome!  Those look nice too - and they're that milky white flower that supports the 'annuum' conclusion you came to in thinking Karneval.  They look a little like there's more than one flower per node, but some just look a bit that way when the anatomy is really that they're distinct.
 
Hopefully you'll be seeing pods form shortly.  It looks nice and healthy and like it's going to produce well.

Yes already got miniature peppers growing! Another shot of the flowers. They smell beautiful actually!
 
BTW a month ago I visited the central market. Many chili stalls. I ended up buying some famous Cumari do Para (yellow) and some slightly bigger and hotter Bode (orange and round).

Yea, lots of Chili shops here.  the most common hot chili that most supermarkets sell is Dedo de Moça.
The ultra mild chili they often scatter freely on their plate to accompany food is called biquinho.
 
The specialised chilis in these shops however are very numerous. The black 'cafe' chili was curious.
 
 
BTW guys, when you cook with chilis, do you include the seeds?

Man, that's just so cool to see such a selection and have it not be just the standard supermarket types.  Did you try the Cafe and how is it?
 
Myself, I often cook with the seeds in because for most applications because I feel they don't usually introduce any negative and they bring in the placental heat with them.  Rocotos would be an exception, though ;)

I am going to try the cafe one next time i visit - I fully suspect it will blow my head off.. I will let you know.  I really like the Cumari do Para. Almost a sweet and sour flavour mixed with heat.
