Chipper/Shredder

I have an older electric B&D chipper/shredder like the one in the photo below that was my dad's and the motor smoked on it yesterday so I am looking into something longer lasting. I prefer electric but it seems they are all cheap so I guess I will look into something in the 5 hp gas engine range.
I found a couple on Craigslist for less than $200 so that is probably my best bet as I can't afford the $375-700 price range of new ones.
What do you all use to make your own compost?

A Bass "O" Matic.

See if you can rig up an old washing machine motor to it.

If you take the motor out you might be able to find something that used the same motor in the junk yard....or wherever.

More Power!!!!!

What isn't serious about replacing the motor?
Maybe finding a bigger one that fits so you don't fry it?

I don't think it would be hard to find something similar laying around.

Thanks Mike but this unit is a piece of junk to be truthful.
It won't take a branch over 1" if that. The motor is small as well and it's belt driven so it's not worth repairing.

I am looking into a gas powered one that has a larger capacity.

I wouldn't buy a used one myself.

You don't know if it was abused etc.
Anyone selling one for $200. or less has a good reason to sell it that cheep...especially if it's a $700.+ unit.

I'd think it got rode hard and put up wet or is on it's last leg and didn't work well in the first place.
At the least ,it probably isn't much better than what you just fried.

My parents have a gas one that is the kind you can feed up to 4in. or 6in. limbs in and it cost well over $700.About double that I think, been a long time since they bought it.

A used one might have body part residue in it if the sellers name is Guido. :)

Well since I don't have $700 it's a used one or nothing.
The used ones I have seen are several years old which is why they are less money than a new one.
As long as it runs good and the blades look OK I don't see any problem with used one. I don't have lots of material to put through it so I don't need a workhorse.

Might check Harbor Freight tools - they have some decent priced units including a cheap electric similar to your for $150 - IF as you say you do not have lots of material to run through it !

Or a decent 5.5 HP gas powered unit for $390

I bought this one used for $125. It blows away the cheap Harbor Freight electric.
This one has a 1-1/2 hp motor that is a beefy 7" in diameter and takes branches up to 1-3/4"
