Coach's 2016 Glog

I just read my first glog post from last year again and was embarrassed. Last year was the first year I grew peppers from seeds and learned a flipping ton from this site & this site alone, really. I had a lot of experience gardening but there were a lot of tricks to growing peppers from seeds that I had to figure out. Once I dialed it all in, it was smooth sailing. I ended up with 280 plants & 180 varieties in 2015... thousands & thousands of pods and very few problems after they started growing true leaves. Beginner's luck. I grew a lot of things I didn't care for and others that were OK but unspectacular, along with finding some really outstanding varieties. I learned A LOT in the past year- not that I don't have plenty more to learn. A huge thank you to all who have shared seeds with me and given me other advice.

If I'm being completely honest, I have to admit aesthetics are a huge part of why I enjoy growing peppers. Yes, I like the heat and taste and I consume hot peppers at least once a day, but looks are really important too. Too much of my time is spent looking at pictures of peppers. :) Some of the annuums don't excite me much but are good eating. Besides that, I don't have any that I'm not excited about because of heat/taste and aesthetics.

Where did you get your pink tiger seeds?

Coach you have nothing to be ashamed of from last year.  You had some great looking pods!  Looks like a great list this year too.  Best of luck on this season!

can't wait to see the progress on the green house too!  Someday I may build one too.

Maybe not in the end- or really from February on, things fell into place, but in December 2014, I had T8 lights 10" from seedlings & had them in standing water most of the time & wondered why my plants were pale and withering. :)

Facebook friend gave me 6. I started 4 & those are one of the very few that have not sprouted 3 weeks later. :(

What is the coloring supposed to  be on the ones you are crowing?

After a long struggle with aphids since I brought them inside, my 4 overwintered plants (Bad Brains, Yellow Brain Strain, Reaper & 7 Pot White) have been banished to the mostly melted snow. RIP. :(

I'm struggling a little with my lighting. What worked last year (T8s & compact fluorescents) is giving my guys a sunburn... even at distances that seem further away than last year. Nothing severe but definitely some purple tinges that shouldn't be there. I'll work it out.

I need to update the list with a few more varieties I just HAD to start last week. Done adding though. Planted my annuums Saturday.

Sorry to hear about the ow's, you had some of the best yellow brain strains I saw last year. As long as you kept the genetics and are growing them out this year, no big deal. Ow can be a little over rated in my opinion, admittedly I like to do a few myself. Mostly because it's nice to see big plants in the winter.

I'm also sure you'll work out the lighting situation. Keep us posted!

Awesome list Coach. I see your not holding back this year. I would say last year was a huge success for you. You took on a huge grow and learned a lot. Can't wait to see how your grow goes this year. I would wish you luck this year, but I think you've got it covered. I wish you luck anyways Coach.

Thanks. Too kind. I was very pleased with how the YBS turned out. Got 'em coming from seeds again so we'll see.

Luck is always needed & I think I had a lot of it last year. Thanks!

I've got 5 trays going now. Most of the plants in 2 of the trays (the oldest plants) look like this. Yellow & losing leaves. Bummed. I don't think I've been watering them too much. I've watered about twice a week and have waited until they get a little wilty lately. I haven't given them any nutrition? Time to try it, I think. Any other ideas? Hopefully, they're salvageable. Ugh.

Wow..just a few right. . Things look great. I saved an image.of your hoop house for my own use when I get my own house.... happy growing and good luck
Thanks. Been busy & we've had some bad weather. I'm almost finished with it. I'll post pictures when I'm done.

I've been absent from THP for a couple of months aside from some lurking. It's amazing how bummed out aphids will make a person. I came back from a 4 day trip out of town & they were somehow still wading in the water I gave them when I left (mystery as to why- hasn't happened since), the dirt was moldy & there were tons of aphids on all plants! When I left, there was a minor aphid problem that I thought I'd done an OK job of handling. The past month has been a struggle dealing with them, trying to keep ladybugs happy, and shuffling plants from inside to a new greenhouse (& figuring out the major temperature swings with it) a few times a week.

I'm happy to report that things are going much better now & I'll be planting some out on Sunday! Got about 200 plants. Lot of varieties I'm excited about. Was disappointed in the germination rates this year (not sure what my problem was) & then the aphids attacked the tiniest seedlings & wiped out a few choice ones I didn't have more seeds of. Early germination was OK but my second & third round of seeds planted was only 40-50%. :( Plants are smaller than they were this year at this time but some of that was by design. Was being overrun by 12-18" plants indoors last year.

Ready to get going!

Nice score on the pavers.  Too bad about losing some varieties.  If I have anything you're looking for, send me a PM.

Never heard of the Seattle Blue Wooly Mammoth Tomato.  Does it stay that fuzzy as it grows?

I hope so. It's nice & fuzzy so far.

I have no shortage of plants or varieties. I shouldn't complain. It'll be good. I've got the Arkansas Peach going strong. ...well semi-strong. 4-6" tall.
