combatting the freeze

Ive seen farmers use propane flame throwers to bring up the temp to keep it from freezing.
I live in a citrus growing region and they use to use smudge pots all the time. I believe they are illegal to burn now though. For a while you could find all the smudge pots piled up on the side of the road by the groves free for the taking but they're difficult to come by now. A lot of people like to paint them and use them for decoration in their yards. Now I believe they use giant fans set just above the canopy to prevent the frost from settling.
