Anyone use these for making compost?

I'm sure there is an easier way but had a friend who has one of these show me his the other day. A very cool setup. Add anything organic (food, grass, ect..) and then add "compost starter" with a little dirt and bingo!
My wife and I were just throwing all of our scraps in a big trash bag and leaving it lay outside. Ants aren't to big of an issue here but I wanted a better way of making compost.
I ended up burying most of it in the ground about a month ago and figure next year I would dig it up and use it. Is that the best way to do that? Compost bin tumbler seemed like an easy solution.
