Compost PSA

How does a 170-180 degree compost pile catch fire? Something sounds fishy.

They must have thrown some dried hay in or something. I don't really know. I know that hay bales have been known to autoignite if they are damp enough in the center to start decomposing.

Yes I have heard that too. Hay must have a low point of ignition.

A compost pile ignited and burned for several days at a landscape supply yard near me. But we are talking about a 20 foot tall mound, I don't see how a backyard compost pile poses any danger.

Not a 55 gallon drum worth, anyway. I remember when  was a kid, my mom stuck a potato wrapped in foil in the miiddle of our compost bin. It took a while, but that tater sure did cook through and through! Maybe these folks added something to their pile to send the decomposition into hyperspeed. Chemical reactions can be funny
