misc Do I need a food hygiene license ? ( UK )

Do you need some kind of food license to make sauce at home and sell to the public.

How do these hippies markets get away with it when most of them look like they don't even wash!!

There's so many food hygiene TV programs on TV at the moment I daren't try it.

I don't know the truth behind it but I've been told that In the UK they don't have the same standards for canning when it comes to pH and acidifying. I've had several arguments over this but some believe that botulism poisoning is too rare to justify the procedures to kill it. Usually it comes down to their old argument "I've been doing this for 40 years and I'm still alive" ....I just shake my head
Here you usually need a few things llike: a commercial kitchen, a low acid safety course, a business license, and a sales license. You'll likely also want a lawyer who knows about food processing
Some smaller markets are making it easier for the small newcomer by having "cottage industry" products which require a lot less hastles. You'll have to look into your area's local rules

Hi Sidewinder,

I don't know if UK is similar to Australia in regulations, but I know that in OZ, home kitchens can get certified for food processing. They get regular inspections and have to follow the usual good processing procedures.

I hope someone from UK will chime in with a definitive answer.

Its right what POTAWIE says that there is not the same fear/ precautions over botulism in UK and many home producers use their own home kitchens.
There are lots of differeing standards and methods between US and UK.

Contact your local Environmental Health Dept and they will send someone round to assess your kitchen / prep area. You do not need stainless steel everywhere - it just needs to be clean and you need all the correct cleaning stuff and procedures in place for food storage etc.
You will have to do a Food Hygene Certificate level 2. This is a test which can be done online for £20 and there are plenty of websites offering them such as http://www.food-hygi...tificate.co.uk/

Here is a link to the UK government website where you will find a guide for food producers and how to
comply with food hygiene regulations:

You will find regulations covering the whole of the European Union here :

Hi,
I think apart from licensing you need to have a food testing so that you give your customer not only the quality but a healthy food.
