Does random variegation happen?

Hey guys,
 
Does variegation happen randomly? I mean by other causes than genetics? I have an Ethiopian Brown plant showing some variegation in its leaves, like a Fish Pepper. I grew the two side-by-side last season so I'm hoping it's some cool cross.
 
I'll try to get a good picture but my phone isn't that great. 
 
That would actually be awesome. I wanted to do a Fish Pepper cross so much last season but I never got the chance to do so. I'll keep this updated!

Edited to add a phone pic. Surprisingly better quality than I thought. Looks a lot like Fish pepper variegation, right? At least the ones I grew started out like that, with more and more variegation as they grew. I'll keep a close eye on it and make loads of pics. It's the only one I have. I have a lot of seed left from the same stock but of course, they're all mixed together. No telling which of the seeds would be from the crossed pod.
