Edema Symptoms and Causes

Ok, that's an interesting read. Sorta the opposite of the wilt caused by transpiration happening faster than water can be drawn up from the roots that we were discussing the other day.

"The most common cause of edema is the presence of abundant, warm soil water and a cool, moist atmosphere. Under these conditions the roots absorb water at a rate faster than is lost through transpiration."

So, are these the conditions that your plants are under?

Pam,

I really don't think that I have the right conditions for this, but according to OSU's preliminary findings, this is what they think I have. Monday I am going to send some specimens to them for examination. I hope that this is it because they said that it isn't detrimental to the plants and that usually recover.

With all that said......

I think that it is a coincidence that I discovered this after I started using a fan in my grow room for more that half an hour a day. After reading a post (which I can not find now) suggested that using a fan all day long was more beneficial than how I was originally doing it. So maybe, there is a connection even though the fan never lowered the temps lower that 78 degrees, but it may have circulated cooler air than that of the soil temps. Again with my new saying...I guess anything is possible...
But, I do tend to keep ALL of my plants on the dry side so who knows. I am really just more confused that when I started on this problem.

Oh yeah, OSU did mention that it could be brought on by not enough light and since my plant have gotten bigger, my shelves have become crowded thus maybe its a light thing. Too many plants per square inch? However, I keep the light (shoplights) about 1 inch above the plants and they all seem to be growing and getting bushy not leggy. I just have no idea what is going on...
