seeds Germination problems

I have one tray of Mainly C. Baccatum That just Won't germinate. Seeds range from 1-3 yr old but almost none have germinated. This was placed next to a tray of c. chinese that was planted on the same date and is kept under the exact same conditions and on that tray over 70% are up. About the only seeds up in the tray are fresh seeds that I took directly out of some fresh ripe pods. What could be causing this I normally Have my baccatums up in about 1-2 weeks and It has been about 3 weeks Temps range from 80-90 for the highs and from 60-65 for the lows gets that at night. I usually have a little higher lows but not that much maybe 70 at the most. Could that little of temp difference make that much impact on germination?
One other thought is PH could it be to low or high? I use a peat based starting mix that I make myself out peat compost vermiculite and some lime. What is the optimum ph or starting c baccatum peppers? Mine is usually around 6-6.5 but this batch could be a little lower or possibly higher not sure as my ph meter broke. But then again most of the chinese are up and they are in the same mixture its just the baccatums and some annums (non fresh) that aren't up. :banghead:

Maybe try germinating the seeds in a damp paper towel(in a plastic bag in a warm place) I find this is an easy way to test germinate

I agree with Potawie. Germinating on paper towels in a bag takes a whole lot less space. I typically put a few seeds in and plant what grows, then look at which to keep and which can go. I have alot higher germination rate doing this as opposed to putting them in a seed tray and waiting.

If seeds are only 3 year old it is fine all you have to do cover the tray with plastic clear greenhouse hood will keep the moisture & speed up germination.I use lately only Aerogrow Elite 6 have 100% germination never fail even the hardest wild variety like C.Tovarii in the past never germinate for me did this time & it is 2" tall already this think works wonders & I love it.

I think I found the problem My crappy soil ph tester read 6 as the ph this I am assuming is borderline to low for the germination of peppers?

I could be wrong here , but I don't think the pH would effect germination. But it would or could effect the seedling when it starts to grow.

Last year I found that kicking up my heating matt to where the temp was around 85 degrees inside my dome helped. If I'm off here someone will steer you right.

Good luck & Peace,

In my opinion 6 is fine, but i would not believe anything those cheap ph testers say anyway.

What makes it do so well 915River? I mean why would it be better than germinating in regular soil under a heat mat?

It show you when you need nutrients moisture is always there the light is powerful & keep the steady temperature, aerogrow is a version of smaller simpilfy aeroponics work well for me where I start my C.Galapagoence & another very rare wild variety.Work better no in the soil for me & I don't have to worry to loose presious seeds for some of those I hunt for over fife years & more I still in the hunt for some I never new they exist it is not easy to find some wild variety you no that only if you have very good sources.I find out that most wild seeds come from around jungle of Amazon basin. Don't take me wron Chris I do both germinating in Aerogro & professional mix soil.
