Growing under Metal Halide

I should be getting some seeds in the mail soon and can't wait till next season to start some peppers. I have a metal halide that I use for my orchids and other houseplants for the winter months. Is there anything I should know about peppers and growing indoors? Mabye what type of soil mix and distance from the fixture? It can get quite hot but has never been a problem with the other plants. Any advice will be helpful.
 
IIRC it is 400 watt. It does pretty good for everything else I put under it. I used to have a lot of tropical plants I kept but they were alot of trouble and getting quite big so I got rid of everything but the orchids.
