Hardening off the plants - from the git-go

Five days ago, I sowed about 26 tomato seeds. Yesterday evening, on schedule, the first one popped through the soil. This morning, the tray went into the greenhouse, such as it is (maybe 12' of 30' of walls up). According to my thermometer, which records the highest and lowest temps, it got as high as 118 degrees today (in the sun).

I figured the sprouted seedlings (three this morning) were cooked, as in burnt to a crisp. Much to my delight, they look quite well, though one still has its cap on.

Now I think I understand how some seed packets state to sow seeds 4-6 weeks in advance of transplanting. It's never worked for me, usually it is more like 8-10 weeks. But I really think they will be more than large enough in four weeks, as they will go in water and not the dirt. Plus, they will be completely hardened.
