Hints for ornamental peppers?

Any hints on getting full lush ornamental plants? I have some Prairie Fire and Numex Twilight that I want to be compact yet full and lush.

mark:)

First thing to do would be to give yourself an uppercut and then ask yourself why am i growing ornamentals!

On a serious note a good quality well draining potting mix with some slow release fertilizer should be just fine mate.

If you're starting indoors, keep plants very close to floro lights. Some ornamentals respond very well to "topping"(pinching off top growth) which results in a shorter, bushier, more compact plant which will take up less room. I suggest you try it with a few plants but not all of them. You also probably want to avoid nutrients with high nitrogen n/p/k as this will usually result in taller plants which will take longer to produce pods

Why not? Some people grow flowers... some peppers are prettier... just because you can't eat them doesn't mean you shouldn't grow them.

And some are edible.

lol!! nothing against ornamentals but that was a great comment

If there were any that i found that tasted good i would grow some. But then they wouldn't be "ornamentals" rather "food" :D

There is nothing wrong with ornamentals, they are better than flowers! I would rather a pot of ornamental chillies over a bunch of flowers any day. Not only do you get the different coloured pretty flowers on them but you get colourful fruit as well.
I use chilli focus or seaweed/fish emulsion on mine once - twice a week. Mine also grow well in small pots and they stay quite compact.

Ciao all-

Ornamentals are not going to give you the same flavour you get with your main crop peppers, that's certain..but..they do have a place in my kitchen for spicing up and prettying up jars of pickles. I've used all of them with good results, some are hotter than others, just like all of the other peppers.

Most ornamentals don't taste very good to me so I usually don't eat them in any form but I like to make ristras and ornamental jars

Yes, Potawie, how do you make these ornamental jars? I've seen them, but have no idea how to make them and would like to do so this coming Spring and Summer.

:)

I'll try to find or take some pics. I used straight vinegar but I guess you could preserve them in alcohol as well.
