Hot pepper last year, seeds grew sweet peppers this year

So last year I pulled seeds from the long cayenne peppers posted below that a friend grew. They had heat to them nothing crazy just normal for the variety.

So this year the first ripe pepper was picked and eaten last night.. very nice flavor but no heat at all, sweet like a ripe red bell pepper. Could this have been cross pollinated? pic below is the pepper I picked yesterday that came from the pods above.

The originals you grew do have the wrinkly look of the Burpee F1 hybrid, which confusingly enough, has the name Cheyenne.

Your newer pods, which may be regressed F2's, have a smoother look to them.

May want to ask your friend where he got his seeds from.
