seeds Hydro Seed tote

So I decided to try and build a hydro seed tote, just to see if it works. I took two 27 gallon storage totes from THD, used one to hold the seeds and the other as a reservoir. I cut holes in the squares on the lid of the seed tote with a 2 inch hole saw to make 23 holes. Then I filled them with 2 inch Net cups. I started the seeds in 1.5 inch rock wool, but I had to change to 2 inch rock wool blocks because the 1.5 inch ones left too much of a gap in the net cup and water was spraying out. Then I cut a hole for the return line on the bottom and fitted pvc pipe to it so it drains into the reservoir.

For the sprayer inside the seed tote I just use pvc pipe and sprinkler heads. Hooked them up to a pump that is in the reservoir. At first I had a 400 GPH pump but it wasn't strong enough to make all of the sprinkler heads spray, so I bought a 1600 GPH pump (I know its over kill but it was only $8 more than the next smaller pump and I wanted to make sure it worked), it powers all the sprinkler heads great.

I have it on a 6 hours on 6 off cycle with the Mars Hydro 300w LED light. Its been 3 weeks and the seedling seem to be recovering from the transplant shock. I had to rip them out of the 1.5 inch rock wool cubes and put them into the 2 inch cubes. (I was not as gentle as I should have been) All but one seemed to have recovered and started growing again. I keep the reservoir filled with Masterblend Pepper formula water, right now its at half strength about 1.0 EC. In another week or so I may bump it up to 1.6-1.8 EC. They seem to be green and the roots are starting to grow down for now.

The holes without plants in the pictures are just rock cubes that I stuck in there to block the water from coming out. I put a seed in each one just to see if they grow, its been less than 2 weeks, so we'll see how it goes.

Plants in the seed tote seem to be doing well. Going to have to start this again in January so I they will be ready to transfer to Hydro totes in the spring.
