I wonder if I've ever had wasabi?!!!

I know a lot of Japanese restaurants use green colored horseradish... so I wonder if I've ever really had wasabi! Probably not!

I remember seeing a show about a New Zealand grower of Wasabi. If my memory serves me right the grower said that true wasabi must be eaten within a very short time of harvesting, I think a matter of a few hours, and that all commercial wasabi products are made from horseradish. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

That's a fair point......Now i'm wondering the same thing

I've had a small amount of Wasabi powder (about enough to go on your little finger nail).......and it was enough to have my head in a lot of pain.......It's like brain freeze about 1000 time worse...and I put it in my mouth.....Check out this guy.

If you have had it THP, it would have to be at a high end Sushi restaurant or most likely in powdered form. There are a couple of places that grow it in the U.S., but not many.

Great thread,,,,Went to s sushi bar today with my wife .Drank coke and missed out on the food. The wasabi was so light ,,,chikln soup would of been hotter.Any recipes out there?

I have had it in powdered form, never fresh though. It tastes REMARKABLY similar to the horseradish product, but I would say somewhat more concentrated.

Had real wasabi while in Japan. The difference between it and the green "stuff" you usually get is like the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing it. ;)

However, there is a place in this world (and in my heart) for both!

Horseradish is a wonderful thing!

Back in India, only we Gujaratis make wasabi pickle. I have never understood why others have never liked it.We call it Dara Garmar Nu Athanu
Ahhhh....going to look for wasabi here in Detroit.

Yes, I too had pure Japanese wasabi whenever I visited Japan in 80s and 90s.How I miss Nippon.:(
