It's too damn HOT for a new pepper Glog!

Because I live in a HOT climate!  Temps in the upper 90's and 100's for most of the year, and a few sudden drops to the 40's for a few days scattered in.  And wind is a constant! It's tough to grow sensitive plants here, but I've never backed down from a challenge!  I should have sown 2 months ago, but life was busy.  I had 4 red rocotos started, but one day they were all dead for some reason  :mope:   Anyway, here's to a new growing season!!

Last year was great, tons of peppers were turned into powders and mashes to last me until next winter.  This year I'm trying new peppers that I haven't grown before.

Red Rocoto
Aribibi Guisano
2 house strains from my buddy, "Feltmann Smooth" and "Feltmann Wrinkled"
Bubblegum Pumpkin

The rocotos will be indoors most of the year, I just want to see if I can actually grow one.  I'm interested in the Aribibi and I've never grown a bubblegum variety before.

The ones from my buddy are a crapshoot to see what they'll be like.  He's been growing for 10 years after I gave him a variety of seeds. Every year since he's kept seeds from his favorite plants, or plant and grows them the next year. Of course he says that he can't figure out why they're always different every year   I was at his house and was really impressed by 2, so I kept the seeds. They were red, super hot, and fruity.  The only difference was the appearance, one was smooth and the other was wrinkled. I named them for him, Feltmann the Felt-nator!!

Seeds were put in water yesterday evening, sown into Solo cups this evening.

We are underway!

Good luck . Rocotos are very fragile. I've planted 30 seeds from 5 varieties and 10 germinated .
At the moment I have 4 small plants.
I have some great peruvian market Red Rocoto seed
descendants - at F3 this season. Very good germinator,
and nice, big, apple sized (small ;) ) bright red fruit.
PM me an addy, and I'll send a few of the 2017 seeds
your way, Jacques.

The rocoto is just a hook still, but it's doing something!

The last time I germinated the rocotos from this bag of seeds I had 4 out of 5 grow, so I'm expecting equal success this time.

Today the other Feltmann variety, "wrinkled", was up.  That's really fast for superhots

Just a quick update before I leave for a week.  The Feltmanns are winning, 3 out of 4 are up and open. 2 out of 4 rocotos are now up, past the hook stage. A BBG pumpkin is a hook. No Aribibi yet.  Still pretty quick starts for superhots! I just put seeds into solo cups in my unheated, but 70F garage.

I've also made a few ferments from 2018 peppers. Started with Greek yogurt whey. One I used fresh squeezed orange juice for the water and has a peel in it. The chocolates are started with my sourdough hooch and have bourbon soaked charred oak sticks in it, ala Tabasco.

See y'all in a week!

Back home and everything is fine. Actually not too much has changed.  Aribibi is the only no-show so far.  Still have one rocoto and a Feltmann too.  Pretty happy with the quick results so far.  Just placed an order for some 25 gallon grow bags, and planning on sewing the rest.  Enjoy the season!

Hooray for the great germination success, Rob!

In the sun already? I'm jealous

Looking good there neighbor!

I had mine out for 5-6 days this week but had to pull them in; we're in the high 30's the last 2 days (for the lows).

Good luck this season!

Yep, same here. Back out today, will pull in tonight and that should be it for the next few weeks.

Not too much to update, the plants don't really have any real leaves yet.  The outside garden did give me a surprise though, I chopped this golden ghost down and left it unwatered in the elements for months.  The persistence of life is strong in some individuals....I think I'll be keeping this one and giving it as a gift to somebody. I'd feel bad about killing it twice.

Completely unrelated, but check out these tomatoes! The seeds sprouted inside!

Always find it pretty cool when I see the seeds inside a mater do that...Had a fella tell me a few years ago that the acidity was very high for that particular fruit and it ate away the protective gel around the seeds. No idea if it's true or not but still cool to see.

Awesome your plants are outside already hope you have a great season!!
