annuum Jalapeno turns orange overnight...

Okay, I've never seen this happen, and this not my 1st jalapeno. hehe I like to make chili for football weekends, so for the occasion, yesterday afternoon I went to my local fruit & veg market (the same place I got that 'sweet no-heat' cayenne pepper that led me to this forum last April) and pick up 3 mixed (red and green) bell peppers and a 3 & 1/4" perfectly green jalapeno. I left everything out on the counter all night, and got up at 6 AM to see this....

Now, I did arrange the all the peppers for the camera. They were all sorta together all night, but I can't swear the jalapeno was touching a pepper(s). Is it possible/likely that the already-red/orange/green bells give off a chemical that the jalapeno would pick up and start turning orange? It all happened kinda fast. Maybe the jalapeno was just trying to fit it.

Hmmm....you can't post pics here? Tried to use the 'img' tag, no workie.

I bet it turns red later today. I had one of my purple Jalapenos do that as I watched for the most part. I took pictures of it cause it was a cool half and half and by the time I got back around to do some staging, it was all red.

'Grow up together'? I don't think so. But I did buy them from the same orphanage, separate rooms. hehe Actually, I've seen jalapenos with a hint of orange, not too many, but never like this. It was green yesterday. Could've had a tiny touch of orange, but to totally change color in 16 hours (coulda been a lot less than that for all I know)

Here's a better picture. Being it's 9 AM now, I can take them out on the balcony with natural light instead of flourescent plus a flash.

As you can see, it's more of a tomato red than orange. I'll report on the taste by tomorrow.

Purple?!? Now that's something I've never seen. Is that a different breed? And see my picture below...they are taken in natural light, and yes, it's tomato-red. I would just like to know what caused it. Is it the proximity of the red/green bell peppers giving off a chemical or what?

Probably was from Ethylene gas released by the ripe peppers nearby during the night, not sure why it went orange instead of red though. Odd.

Thanks for the link. Yeah, I figured it had to have something to do with the red bell peppers right next to it. IDK if you saw my updated post, but the jalapeno is actually more of a tomato red than orange. If it alters the taste in much the same way a red bell pepper is sweeter than a green, I might start purposely doing this. It probably won't affect the heat factor, at least I hope not.

Yeah, heard about the paper bag effect. Anyway, since I said I'd report on the taste, I will. The flesh was surely sweeter, and not necessarily what you'd want in Mex recipes. It was just fine in chili, especially since I had an extra green jalapeno in the fridge. But surely the heat in the seeds did not suffer a bit (duh?), they were totally wicked.
