Jaltomata bohsiana

It's been awhile since I posted any plants so here goes. My chili grows are all boring, small and annuums,so I might as well start posting plants in this section. This is a Jaltomata very closely related to procumbens and darcyana. These plants tolerate more heat like their Mexican sisters and are also edible--like the flavor of a bitter blackberry.

I tried to grow jaltomata in the tropics but they didn't do well... I think they might prefer a Mediterranean type of climate. Good luck for you though :) You use them in salsas?

The species from Central America are easier to grow in warmer climates but still don't do well. This was the driest and hottest summer in 40 years and they all struggled, especially the Andean species.

Very cool plant JB.

Wasn't sure if the berries held a bit of heat like their chile pepper cousins, or not, so googled them.

We don't see them up in these northerly climes, so thanks for sharing your growing experience with them here.

No heat on these guys but incredible plants, and edible. 160 day is not uncommon for germination. I have done 9 or 10 species and as I mentioned before, the ones native to Mexico and C.America are the easiest. Added some new ones with orange/red nectar and they are stunners. I will be sure to get some up to you this fall.
