Labelling Pots

How does everyone label their pots so as to remember what's what?

I tried icy pole sticks -- they went mouldy.

Next for me is "permanent" (yeah, haha, right) marker on electrical tape.

when they get into their next set of pots, I might go for names printed on heavy card then laminated.

Failing this, I do know of a leading label maker that will produce plant labels if enough interest is shown (small business, focus on kid's labels so they don't lose stuff at skool).

Any other ideas?

Simple, I don't. It appears from other peoples pictures that they just write directly on the pot. I guess they use the pot year to year with the same type of plant.

I bought a label maker last year, and put the tags on wooden tongue depressors. Painting the tongue depressors makes them last a lot longer and takes care of most of the mold.

I also make a "map" of each tray as I plant it, and a map of the garden as I plant out.

I plan to get those flat plastic stakes from Lowe's to label them outside, but for now scotch tape and marker or just marker work fine.

I am using disposable plastic cups with slits in the bottom right now. Permanent marker works fine.

I buy plastic ones and also write on the pot since permanent markers aren't always so permanent on plastic. You can also make plastic plant markers out of old blinds.

By far the easiest and cheapest way (I do this) is to buy a set of mini blinds (usually $4-5). Cut them up about 8-12" in length. You'll get hundreds of labels for $5. Write on them with #2 lead pencil. They'll NEVER fade. I learned the hard way two years in a row until I moved to this method. Highly recommended!

Chris, I like that idea. Right now I am using old Lexan signs that I had left over when I sold my carwash, I just cut them into strips and then cut the strips into 2'' pieces for my pots indoors. And you are correct pencil does not come off. As for my seed starting I just use graph paper. Now I think i will try the window treatment thing so I can get longer and wider markers.

I've never gone out and bought blinds for labels, but if I see some in a trash pile, I have pulled them out.

I use a magic marker to write a number on the pot like Mike does then I keep an excel file with all pertinent information on the plant logged under that number....it's just easier for me to do it that way since I use excel a lot......

After a while it does chip off just like on your nails so I also put it on the side of the plant saucer (is that what they're called?).

That basically what I use. Be sure to use a black magic market because any other color fades faster in the sun (red fades the fastest).

I have very good memory for certain things (dispite the massive pyscadelic use...amazing, I know) so besides starter trays I generally don't use them. I just look at the plant and go, "that's such and such plant and I planted it on such and such day".

I am using black Sharpie and just write on the side on my containers. It seems to be working great so far.

Sticky labels on the side of the pot or nail polish.
Nail polish does sound like a great idea...But, I can see my wife now...WOW...she'll have me sleeping out in the tool shed for sure...

The idea is to use the horrid colours that she'd never wear.

Looks good rainbowberry, Hmmm, I wonder if the local fabric shop stocks any nail polish:P, I was in there a month ago and bought several meters of tulle, then went back and bought some ribbon, they even asked is this for you?(cheeky old ladys) I then felt the need to explain my chilli fiascoes to them:P

 over here most big supermarkets sell nail polish that's quite cheap so you can disguise it with your shopping. My brother used to wear it because he said it strengthened his nails for playing the guitar, it was clear though.

I almost always have a few bottles of polish that I don't use. Sometimes the color isn't right when you get it home, or I bought it to go with something I had to wear at a wedding, or whatever. Ask if she has some she doesn't want anymore.
