wanted Looking for a few quality growers for Contract Grow.

Looking for just a handful of great gardeners or growers to Contract out some Hot Pepper and Tomato seeds for delivery in 2013 for our 2014 season.
Seed quantities would be 25,000 to 50,000 for Peppers.....or 6 to 12 oz.
Maybe 8,000 to 20,000 tomato seeds...or 1 to 3 oz.
Peppers would be one variety unless you have isolation.
Tomatoes could be 3 varieties or so.
We have several smaller growers that can make an extra couple of thousand dollars.
Some are right here on THP.
The larger growers can make a whole lot more than that.
If you have some interest email me for more details directly at pepperjoe@sc.rr.com
THANKS,
Joe

so each grower would have to produce 25,000 to 50,000 seeds? If thats the case i wouldnt consider small growers they would need alot of space indoors to start and alot of space outdoors to grow

Say you have 25 seeds in a pod. If you multiply that out by 50-100 pods on a given plant, it would take 10-20 plants at 100 pods per, or 20-40 plants at 50 pods per, to produce 25,000-50,000 seeds.

Some plants are more seedy than others of course, and some produce less than 50-100 pods. But when I looked at this I figured I could do it in my own small garden, if I was willing to only grow one type (which I am not). Last year I fit in 45 pepper plants, and this coming year will be around 50. I could easily make the number required in any type of cayenne or tabasco, but it would be tough for some of the superhots that produce a small number of seeds.

yeah thats what i was thinking of the super hots that dont produce too many seeds im growing 200 plants next year dont know what kind or which ones yet have to check out what i actually have lol. I wouldnt be able to narrow down to 1 strain. but i guess if you making a contract grow you can but i like variety. With any c.annuum strains you would get like 100,000 seeds from a dozen or so plants but not c.chinense

Actually, i got an ouce of brainstrain seeds off 6 plants this year. It cam over 3 harvest, first one was 160, 2nd was 60, 3rd was 130 or so pods. so you should be able to meet that with 20-25 platns I would say. But than again it alot depends on the grower, ect ect.

Hey Gang,
I'm excited with the quick response and promise to answer every email soon.
The best way to reach me is by email because some days I'm on THP regularly, other times not for days at a time.

I'll discuss each possibility with you individually, as everyone is in a different place with growing space, growing capability, experience, etc.
With this being a public post...let me say this as honestly as I know how to.
This offer is not for everybody.
But for the growers that this can work for it can be some extra income.
My brother Bill and his wife Veronika grew some varieties for us (a smaller quantity of seeds they grew in Ft. Myers, Fl) and made about $2,000+ in their first year.
That was just in their backyard garden and adding some containers.
My friend Sammy's bother Richard and wife Kelly grew for us and had several crop issues...so may make 1/2 that much.
I have larger contract growers that can make almost 10x that much.
EVERY case is different.
Some of this is new to me as our business is growing so fast. Hmmm... "Growing"....that wasn't on purpose. I'm not that smart.
:P
But we're still learning as we go.
I had some growers did well last year...and some didn't.
The ones that didn't do well had crop failures due to issues like the Drought, damping off, cooking their tiny seedlings in the sun before hardening off, etc.
Some underestimated what it takes to de-seed hot peppers...using gloves, masks etc.
One guy went to the bathroom after deseeding without using gloves...OUCH!
What I'm excited about here at THP is that we may have a higher level of grower that is used to working around these issues with growing Hot Peppers and Tomatoes.

Here's the risk at your end and my end...very little. Mostly our time.
If your crop doesn't grow and I can't buy your seeds, my risk is that I need to try and find the variety you were growing for us elsewhere. I have no actual cost involved except the time that I spent with you.
We did hold a big conference call to talk about "Best Methods" with all growers.
Your risk is any expense that you may have spent growing a hot pepper crop that failed.
My guess is that's little downside if you have a growing infrastructure already in place.
If not, the beginning initial expense could add up.
I supply the seeds (so you have no costs there) to make sure they are a pure strain that I can stand behind.

This isn't a race to respond....one thing I now realize is that getting a supply of seeds besides what we grow ourselves is an increasing and ongoing challenge. So my guess is we can always use and appreciate qualified growers...big and small.
Also, I don't want to start to depend on a few big growers (in addition to what we grow) ...because if something happens to one of them our seed supply could be at risk.
These are just some of the fun risks of running a small business like we have.
:violin:
I just thought I'd put all of this out there for the sake of disclosure and total honesty so you can decide if you want to respond or if this possibility is even for you..

The upside to being a grower is not just the extra income, but you still keep the peppers.
Freeze them, dehydrate them, make hot sauces, sell them on Ebay or THP. Whatever.
With the Tomatoes you can freeze the tomato pulp for Chili, Spaghetti sauce, Salsa, etc.
You're really just selling the seeds that you may throw away anyway.

Anyway, this is a little bit more information to save my time and yours to see if this may be a fit for you.
Thanks,
Joe

That sounds awesome!! I can grow super peppers. Make money from the seeds. And use the pulp for hot sauces and powders. Sounds like a Win Win. I sent a message to your e-mail address.

Hey THANKS for all of the response gang.
Looks like we'll make a few contracts...and make a few friends as well.
We're getting interest from folks with a small growing area that just want to grow an ounce or two of Tomato or Pepper seeds.
That's cool.
And we're getting response froms some who want to ramp it up and try to do 10x that amount.
It's all good.
Keep the emails coming in to pepperjoe@sc.rr.com
If we get filled up with growers for this season...I can always start a 'wait list' for next year.
One thing I know for sure, I'll always need quality seeds grown in isolation.
Great Gardening,
Pepper Joe

Not trying to be controversial here, but how do you guarantee seeds grown mainly by hobby growers? Do you visit their grow to ensure they are are being grown in isolation? I would think buying like this would open you up to some issues in the reliabilty of the seeds.

Just curious

Thanks Mod.
And thanks to everyone else for the enthusiastic response.

I thought I'd lighten this post up a bit...

Again, THANKS for the cool emails...I'm sure we'll do some business and maybe pick up a few friends along the way.

Smitty and Company,
I believe I answered all initial emails with a price list and some requirements and questions I may have.
The 2nd round of emails with our response to your questions, etc... I'll get to by this weekend...no rush we have plenty of time to finalize things and for us to ship you out an initial package with seeds and a few goodies.
That's why I started this offer early and got way in front of it.
Also, I don't want to rush my individual responses to you all...but individualize it to establish a comfort level in case we move forward.

I'm slamming this week....we're going to press with 60,000 2013 Catalogs in a few days and I'm adding 50+ items to Pepper Joe's and Penny's Tomatoes Websites. Then after that we're adding several pages and the normal updates to website pages to stay current.
After that we slow down for a few weeks....then all hell breaks loose from Christmas to Tax day in April...that's our busy season.
Then we're heading on Vacation....

Hey Team just a quick update.
I believe that I've answered each and every email.
If not email me at pepperjoe@sc.rr.com
I've received dozens of quality emails.
I should have sent you a growers price list and to some folks a list of what we need you to grow.
Again, with this volume of responses, just drop me a line if I wasn't clear or didn't respond.
I think that I did answer everyone.
ALSO...double check the math on any numbers $$$ that I gave you. Sending out this many responses back is bound to have a mistake or two.
Penny pointed out that I asked one grower to grow 5,000 OUNCES of a Tomato variety instead of the intended 5,000 SEEDS.
Just saying,...call me out in an email if any of the numbers don't stack up.
But I did spend a lot of time and energy to try to be extremely clear and accurate.
Again, THANKS for all of the enthusiastic responses....you guys are AWESOME.
Looking forward to finding some new Growers and maybe new friends.
:P
Joe
