Making Powder? I use a Gas Mask

Several years ago I stopped making my own hot sauce and switched to making powder. I grow a few of my own, but there is a good source of peppers about 30 minutes away where I pick my own. For the first few years I really suffered making the powder as it would get in my eyes, nose, and throat and I wondered if the effort was really worth it. Then it dawned on me (I'm a slow learner  ) - get a Gas Mask! So, I went to the local Army Navy and picked up a gas mask, and it really helps quite a bit. So, last year I made two different blends of powder - One was called 'Blister' and the other called 'Gas Mask'. Here's a picture of me with a portion of a flyer I put together. (I gave some of it away at work)

I've seen the mask, and the biohazard (or painters) suit as well, especially when dealing with extracts and superhots.

In India, no one generally powders chilli peppers in combinations.
Each pepper variety is is different and has its own aroma.

I would never mix Bydgi with Reshampatti or sannam. They all have totally different aromas.

Yeah, If I have a lot of chillis to grind I use ski googles and a face mask!!!
I tried the face mask (like the one doctors wear), but I had trouble breathing and getting enough air. The Gas Mask can be hot when grinding in hot/humid weather, but at least it keeps the powder out of my eyes and lungs.

I use a painter's dust mask when I grind the peppers. Easy enough to get a hold of at work, and keeps me from coughing. Just gotta make sure the kids are out of the house first. Don't want the baby to get a wiff.

I am banned from the house when I make the powder. I'm on the back deck, with all the windows to the house closed. One time I cheated a bit, and had the dehydrator going in the garage, and overnight pepper fumes spread throughout the house. Now, I even have to dehydrate on the back deck. (See a separate thread on what I did to our blender)

I do run the dehydrator in the garage. Never had a problem with the smell coming in the house. I also grind in the garage even if no one is home. Don't want to take the chance of spilling some. The baby is at the stage where she loves to pick stuff up and put it in her mouth.

I prefer a Kappler suit and reverse pressure hood. When experimenting with new ideas at home, I swear to God our neighbors must think we're running a meth lab.

What you're making is far more valuable!;)

I used to use a gas mask, but buying and properly storing the filters was getting too costly. Now I just hold my breath for long periods of time:) or put my shirt over my face

Funny! I should look for a HAZMAT outfit - or even a suit like the astronauts use - that should get the neighbors attention, and probably the local police :)

We actually have a couple local cops stop by every now and then to pick up some sauces for the HQ, and I've gotten some rather strange looks from them every now and then.
