mold

I am having a little mold problem I have read that peroxide will get rid of it. What is everyone using to get rid of the mold. I have not used my fan until today(just lazy).

I like things simple when it comes to growing and fertilizing. In a previous thread someone mention corn meal sprinkled around the plants worked (AJ and Pam) And it does so give it a shot and also I heard HP works but I like things simple in life Keep the fan on them will definitely help. Good Luck

If you try the cornmeal make sure you use the plain meal and not the self rising. Also, check the label for salt content. You don't want any salt in the meal. You shouldn't need to use much, just a light dusting should do it.

I think letting the fan blow fresh air into their atmosphere, and letting the soil dry out some before you water again will help as well. Mold will flourish in a warm, humid atmosphere.

Hey Dale aren't you getting ready to pot up those plants to something bigger soon anyhow. When you do that just bring the soil up to the seed leaves and cover the little bit of mold. I get purple plants like yours when I leave mine in their 72 cell tray longer than I should and up close to the floros. Your plants look a lot like mine...wink wink.

I don't see mold. But they do look a bit sick too much purple.
Could be too much light or fertilizer.

habman, the reason I asked if you were serious is, what is to much light? and how do you even know if these plants have seen any fertilizer. What are you basing your answers on?

PRF, no these plants have a long way to go before they move into a larger home. Won't the mold just keep growing if all I do is bury it?

All these purple seedlings came up purple they are not changing colors under the lights.

Dale:

I had a bad attack of mold/fungus back about 3 weeks ago in my germination trays...I left 3 trays covered with the plastic domes and 5 with no dome on them...temperature was 83-86F...the covered trays got mold. I asked the question then about the mold and Pam said Corn Meal would work. I sprinkled corn meal liberally on the top of the growing medium. The mold/fungus died without any damage to the young seedlings. The only issue I had with the corn meal was after it did its trick with the mold/fungus, a hard crust formed on top of the soil...I attribute this to one reason my germination rate was lower...combination of fungus/mold and the hard crust.

When I transplanted my contest Nagas....the sides of the 9 oz cups were literally coated with this mold/fungus. I put new soil in 6" containers...dug a hole to fit the soil coming out of the 9 oz cups...sprinkled cornmeal in the hole and coated the outside of the transplanted soil. No problems with mold to date.

Pablo said if you use hydrogen peroxide in all of the water/fertilize solutions you put on the plants you will never have a problem with mold/fungus. I have started using 3 Tbsp peroxide per gallon of water/fertilize solution and have had no problem with mold since. There are some cons when using the peroxide often....it also kills the beneficial fungii.

I had to weigh the overall impacts to my plants and decided that every bit of water/fertilize solution touching my plants would include a small amount of peroxide.

As far as the purple goes...I have several of my superhots that have purple leaves...someone said it might be too much light. But...now that they are bigger, the true leaves are green and lush. I think they just outgrow it when they get bigger...

What type of soil are you using. Certain types are much more succeptible to mold than others. I can't really see the mold in the pic but the plants look good.

AJ, thats what I was looking for, the amounts and how often to use the peroxide.

POTAWIE, I am using Pro-Mix. I have never had the problem with mold before so it's kinda catching me off guard. The Promix that I have in my overwintered Big Jim does not have mold in it.

What is to much light? There are people using thier lights 24 hrs. a day. Could someone please explain to me what to much light is?

Dale

Pro-mix is usually quite mold resistant, was it a new bag or was it sitting around for a while?
They're not getting too much light IMO. Many of mine are purple too and very healthy.

I have some in miracle grow (I know...) where the lower leaves and some tips are turned purplish. I attribute this to too much fert.

I just use something with neem oil and it takes care of the mold. I think what I used was called "Garden Safe" and it was the 3 in 1 bottle.

found it Dale...this is a direct quote from Willard3 (Pablo)

"If you treat all water that goes on or near chiles w/3-4 tablespoons/gallon of water Hydrogen peroxide, all fungus/pathogens are easy to control."

potawie said in another thread that the purple is a substance the plants produce that kind of acts like a sunscreen. it's a good thing, it means they're getting enough light (i moved some of my babies to their semi-permanent home where there's natural light to mix in and they finally started showing a little purple, i felt like a better plant mother)

some plants turn purple from cold nights, too much light will make it wither.. not turn purple. some plants have purple, some plants have purple stripes on their stems. all my chile plants have always had purple where the nodes are. purple is god's favorite color :) love it.

Its high levels of blue-green light causing the purple.

"Purple is usually high levels of light producing anthocyanin pigments. Anthocyanins have been shown to act as a "sunscreen", protecting cells from high-light damage by absorbing blue-green light, thereby protecting the tissues from photoinhibition, or high-light stress."

Here's some of my purple babies. Although these are purple varieties, you still need high light levels for them to get that way.

I have some purple ones as well... are high light levels a bad thing? should I be cycling the lighting I have them on 24/7
