My Garden Friends

I've got all kinds of spiders on my plants, but I've got a couple of very unusual looking insects I've never seen before. At first I thought it was an ant, but on closer inspection I realized it was something else. It doesn't have wings; it has a mantis like head and very mantis like "fore feet" (you know, the ones it catches insects with). This morning when I went out this particular one had something white (aphid maybe??) it was holding and eating. I tried to get pictures yesterday but hand held just didn't work; so today I dragged out the tri-pod and shot a bunch of pics to get a couple good enough to actually see this guy. Now, it's only 6-7mm long, so even with a tri-pod this wasn't easy and the morning breeze didn't help. ;)

Anyway, here it is;

wow! that thing looks killer! wish i had those here lol

Yeah, it does. It's got very good eye sight also. To get this guy to face left I held my hand out towards it and he turned to face it. My hand was probably 12-14cm away. He's (?) a fierce little devil.

Here's a great site for finding out what kind of critters are running around your plants. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBYQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbugguide.net%2F&ei=0wg4TOr4DMP38Aba59SqBg&usg=AFQjCNGwCK5IHXo_YRskIOKCfb5Mdb3GBQ

Thanks for the link; my friends may be Mantids, but they (the site) only deals with "bugs" from the US and Canada. Nuts. ;)

Thats a bhut hugly bug! he he he!

Seriously now... great pictures you got there. Never seen that bug before.
Hope he is really hungry and keeps your plants bug free.

Thanks; I think it's quite beautiful actually; especially watching it eat a little white aphid sized bug. ;)
Between those two guys and the 3 different spiders hanging out on my plants I haven't had to spray...yet. In fact I can't spray now because I'd kill my natural predators. Here's keeping my fingers crossed. ;)
