Newbie Question

Hello all
I just found this site and I love it.This Spring I want to plant my own pepper plants and I did some reading on this thread and I have some knowledge now but since I live in a cold climate i have a question or 2. 1 I plan on growing from seed and plan to start inside then move out i plan on using the 5 gallon bucket method or large pot so when should I plant the seeds before i move them outside outside i mean middle of may thru late sept.??? question 2 I probably can get habanero seed and jalepeno seeds at a gardening place by me but what if i want some more extreme seeds like nagas?? any websites or ideas I dont need alot since i plan to start slow 5 6 plants tops?? plus if all goes well hopefully i will have a new german shorthaired pointer pup late spring so i wont have unlimited time for the plants:)

Welcome to THP.
All of the reading that I have done, since this is also my first year, suggests that you should start seeds 6-10 weeks before the last frost. As for seed companies go, I have had excellent experience with my germination rates from Burpee and Tomato Growers although I'm not sure if they sell nagas. Try a search for "Seed Companies" and you will find some great lists. AlabamaJack has even posted a spreadsheet detailing his germination rates per seed company (some great info).

I'd start you habs or C. chinense varieties as soon as you can and put them under fluorescent lights. C. anuum varieties like Jalapenos can be started much later but I'd start them sometime between now and the middle of march for good results.
 
Better to start earlier, better safe then sorry. Especially since its your first year, some may be really slow to germinate etc. By the way, welcome!

Thank you all for your advice.I will use it. I did a search for seeds and tried Ebay. Lots of seeds and good prices but I am wary.I am an Ebay seller so I have an account but I never bought seeds online.has anyone tried it from ebay and is it a good idea?? thanks

I wouldn't buy seeds off e-bay there are far better places with know reputations. Do a search here on seeds suppliers and you'll find lots of info or just make a post in the approprite area, of what you're looking for and someone might be able to help you out.
 
I wouldnt recommend getting seeds on ebay, I would suggest tomatogrowers.com. There's plenty of decent sites but ebay is iffy in my opinion.
 
Thanks again for the tips. Well I did some searching price checking and (gasp:lol:)went with ebay. It is a garden site that sells on ebay and has 100% positive feedback plus I got 5kinds of peppers Scotch Bonnet Habs Jalapenos Serranos and Tabascos. Total of 75 seeds paid 11.50 so that way if i screw up or they dont take im only out 11.50:lol: didnt want to pay much more being a newbie at growing so wish me luck

It's not just about risking money. All your seeds might germinate and all the plants produce great pods - and they all look the same! This is one reason why the Naga Jolokia is looked upon (by most people in this forum) as being a fake. AFAICT, real NJs are the same as the Bhut Jolokia, but people have passed other seeds off as the real thing.

I doubt I can find five varieties for $11 and have them delivered, but it would be easy to find 5, with 15-30 seeds per pack for less than $20. And they would be from reputable sources.

Again, though, I wish you luck and hope you actually found an honest vendor. Let us know how the plants turn out.

Opps i should have said 15 seeds per pack for a total of 75
15 Jalapeno seeds 15 scotch bonnett seeds etc etc
I should have went to a different source for them but given the
loss of my dog 4 1/2 weeks ago I needed a get em now get started soon attitude to help take my mind off it for awhile.The seller has a great rep so got my fingers crossed and if it works (seeding growning fruiting) I will most definately get seeds from a better source. I will however be picking your brains on soils pots/buckets and etc etc :lol:

Tomatogrowers.com, the site I recommended, has about 30 seeds a packet for about 2.50. Thats a pretty decent deal for something is true and original. Just my thoughts! Best of luck to you
 
I liked that site tomatogrowers.com. I figured i would start with common cheap seeds then if all works i would "graduate"
to a site like that my next go around with some more uncommon seeds. If my Jalapenos or Habs dont make it then oh well get some at the grocery store but be a dang shame to muck up something like nagas or more rare types:lol:

Grocery store peppers can be hybrids or can be cross-pollinated so you don't know what you're going to get till they're grown. Store bought Jalapenos are often lower heat varieties, at least where I'm from.
