lighting newley emerged lighting please help!

hi all
my first season starting peppers from seeds
some of my seeds 2x siam 2x aussie black have just popped up out of the ground

just wondering if they need light at this stage? and if so how many hours a day and how far away from the seedlings?

They sure do, and it's really critical.
If you won't give them any light, they'll get all leggy, and you don't want that.
Fluorescents will need to be as close as possible, almost touching the seedlings. HID should be as close as possible, just make sure it's not close enough to burn your plants.

Yes, they do need light, just as Omri said. At the very least, get them in a sunny window right away. That'll buy you a day or two to get lights set up.
