Paint safe for plants?

I am going to try my hand at doing an outdoor ebb and flow in smart pots. I got one of those big plastic pans at home depot near the cement. The problem is it is black and I want to keep my water as cool as possible. Will plastic paint leach out anything?

Any suggestions?

Paint the outside,not the inside of the container.

Put the water reservoir in the ground-cinder blocks or whatever around it...
