PaulG 2019

No grow log for the 2018 season other than the Pimenta de Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques
thread dedicated to Trippa's cross. That one is an ongoing community project going into
second year and a test of the F7 generation. I imagine I will mention it once-in-a-while in
this thread, but the details of its progress will be in the dedicated thread.

I am deciding on a grow list for the 2019 season after growing only Trippa's cross this
season (2018). I definitely have some old favorites that will comprise the great majority
of the grow. I have limited space, so I'm counting on nature to help me make the final
decision. I'll probably start lots of seeds since I'm gun-shy from the poor germination
rates the past couple of seasons.

Here's the pool. Would be nice to be able to grow a bunch of all of them!  I think my
neighbor will shelter the overflow in his yard, but we'll see what to plant and how many
based on what might germinate

c. chinese - 10 varieties
  • PdN x BMJ, F7, white and violet varieties, Trippa's cross
  • Fatali, F2 of seed from Pepper Joe's
  • 7 Pot Burgundy, brown phenotype, pecan shape from 2017 F2 of the 7PB from Windchicken
  • Scotch Bonnet, MoA, F2 of seeds from John/Sim, not high production, but some nice pods
  • JA Red Habanero, F5 of seed from Walk Good/Devv
  • Yellow Scorpion, F7 aka Yellow Trinidad Moruga Scorpion and CARDI Scorpion, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Red, F4, from Spankycolts plant 2012
  • Bhut Jolokia, Chocolate, F3 of seed from Georgia Growhead
  • Bhut Jolokia, hybrid, F2 - I believe it is a  (BJred) x (Pdn x BMJ F1 or F2)
  • Yellow 7 Pot, F2 of seed from Trippa 2013
c. annuum - 4 varieties:
  • JA Red Mushroom, F3, brown phenotype, seed from Refining Fire
  • Pimenta de Padron - Spanish seed, fry up while small and green, throw on some salt
  • Pimenta del Piquillo - Spanish seed, sweet, very flavorful, small stuffers
  • Guindilla - Spanish seed, spicy heat, great pickled, long and skinny
c. frutescens - 2 varieties:
  • Nagahari from Tezpur, India, supposedly very, very hot freebie from Pepper Joe's 2017
  • Chili Costa Rica, F2 (2014) from Hippy Seed Company seed, 2012
c. pubescens - 1 variety:
  • Red Rocoto, F3 of Peruvian Market seed, 2016
That about does it. Seeding time will be here before we know it!

Ha, a second BJ hybrid came up in one
of the RockWool cubes, 26 days from sowing.

Plants starting to hit their 50-ish day marks,
so a lot of forking and budding going on.

A couple of the JA Red Habaneros have
edema problems, so am going back to
top watering them.

Hmmm, I'm still in the dark, most likely we'll get warm enough to plant without a frost in a week. Then it's too hot 5-7 weeks later for fruit to set. I'm getting used to it

Looking good Paul!

Those Yellow Brain Strain seeds from Rich are from a killer background. The last seeds I sowed last season and they quickly overtook all the rest.
Yeah, Scott. It's a beast all right! First seed to hook,
and a head taller than its contemporaries, big leaves
sticking straight out. A monster!

Do you know it's heritage beyond Rich?

Thanks, Gipper! Almost done with the first round
pot-ups, then just a few late comers in RockWool
cubes to go. Then time to start Round Two in mid
April.

Except for some edema on the habaneros, I'm
pretty satisfied. Pod count on the F71 has 10 pods
set, and more on the way. Pretty good for a table-top
garage plant.

Your own grow is looking monster, as well, friend!

I was going to pluck the last sprout of the BJ hybrid
and chuck it. (Post # 462)

But, when I pulled up on it, the root slipped right out,
about 1" or a little more long! I ran to the Aerogarden
with the Chili Costa Rica seeds in it and sliced one of
the sponges down the side and put the little BJ hybrid
in it.

I'm confident it will thrive 'til at least close to plant out.
I'll have to watch the roots.

The 7 Pot Burgundy 'Pecan' is developing
big, spear-point shaped leaves.

Same for the test-tube baby 7 Pot Burgundy.

The cuttings from the 'test tubes' are all really
growing due to having filled the cups with roots.
Nowhere to go, but up! Nice purple shading on
the BJ hybrid cutting.

The Mystery has turned out to be an awesome
plant, as well. Love the ruffled leaves and purple
shading.

Little Chiltepin is growing nicely, too.
Will give this one to my neighbor.

BJ hybrid seedlings are showing good
color, as well.

Looking fantastic Paul!  I'm a huge fan of the foliage on your plants.  That big leaf on the BJ Hybrid is just amazing.
It looks to be a pretty good cross. The plants are very vigorous.
Thanks, CD. I will be putting the cuttings into
two-liter pods this weekend, sometime. Can't
wait to watch them blow up in about a week
to ten days, when the roots start touching the
sides of the pots..

Plants look amazing as always! Best of luck on that growdown, wish I'd have gotten in on it...but asi es la vida I suppose. Hopefully you can make use of those long summer days to win this thing!
Thanks, my friend, I can always count on
you for a good word! I still have four Sri Lanka
seeds if you want.  It's not too late

I don't have any real hope for the grow down
win, but since Andy has the fix in, I might get
2nd!

Very nice root structure Paul, they are gonna take off like crazy now I'm sure!! Not too crazy of course, as we're both in the competition, but crazy enough... ;)

I'll enjoy watching yours take off, Erv!

That 'chinense' plant will be a beast
when it gets to plant-out  :)

Thanks for the good vibe, buddy!

That red rocoto is looking vicious.  And i love to see the bjh grow, such amazingly dark foliage.  Im gonna have to finagle some of these somehow for next year. :drooling:  :drooling:
I have high hopes for the Red Rocotos, and the
BJ hybrid, Brandon!

The BJ hybrid is interesting.  I plan on growing out
4 or 5 of them to see where the best chance lies for
some good pods. Three plants from the 21/2 inch
bumpy, oily pod, and 1 or 2 from the 3" pod.

I will definitely send some seeds your way This Fall.
