PaulG 2020

Wrapping up the season and this grow log!

2020 - Round 1
56 varieties started.
50 plants in Round 1.

Wilds group (16):

Big shout out to PtMD989, Bhuter, fiogga, Smokemaster,
Romy6, Crafty Fox, and CaneDog for making seeds for
these varieties available to a wider audience.
Thanks to all of you!

Cappuccino Chiltepin c. annuum v. glabriusculum - Semillas la Palma
Suffered in Spring start, lost almost all leaves
before going outside in Spring. Great recovery,
but too late for many pods. Probably got about
   12-18. Grow again next year.

Yellow Pequin c. annuum v. glabriusculum - PtMD989 via Bhuter via fiogga  via Smokemaster
Great growth, large yellow (for a wild) pods, fat
spindle shape.Shared a #20 with Texas Tepin and
Cappuccino Chiltepin. Good production, but not
enough ripening time. Same for the Tepin and
   Cappuccino Chiltepin. Easy to harvest.
   Grow again next year.

Amarillo Chiltepin c. annuum v. glabriusculum - PtMD989 via Bhuter via fiogga (Romy6)
Tall and rangy, wanted to be a big plant, even in the
3-gallon container. Ripening spanned a long time, last
plant to ripen up pods in the greenhouse. Topped twice.

Texas Tepin c. annuum v. glabriusculum - Crafty Fox seed train
Very vigorous plant. By Fall, it was covered with
little elongated, red pods that kept well on the plant
until Fall harvest. Best producer of the Glabriusculum
varieties, even with the less than great conditions.

c. chacoense var Exile - PtMD989 via Bhuter via fiogga.
Incredibly prolific and early pod setting. Once ripening
started, small bush was covered in elongated, red half-
inch pods. Easy to harvest. Possible OW.

Putapario Red c. chacoense - Argentina, CaneDog
Another early pod-setter with ripening starting early,
but lasting a long time. Easy to harvest.

CGN 24360 - ‘BB Habanero’ c. chinense - catchthebear
What can I say, the bushiest, most productive
(well, top 3) of the wilds. Even with the wonky Spring,
the bush was dense, and chock full of little yellow
   pods. Very hot.

PI 260501 Yellow Jellybean  c. chinense - PtMD989 via Bhuter via fiogga
Very prolific and early pod-setting. Shared #20 trade
gallon container with CAP 691 and Wiri-Wiri. All three
chinenses in the #20 container looked and behaved in
   a similar manner.

CAP 691 Red Fire c. chinense - PtMD989 via Bhuter via fiogga
   See: PI 260501 Yellow Jellybean

Wiri Wiri c. chinense - Guyana, Wiri Wiri via CaneDog
   See: PI 260501 Yellow Jellybean.

CAP 1491 c. eximium - Brazil, CaneDog
Very slowly developing pods. Nice, graceful plant.
Lots of ripening pods fell off while ripening. The
rest did okay, but took a long time to ripen.

PI 238061 Bird Aji  c. baccatum v. Baccatum- PtMD989 via Bhuter via fiogga
Very nice c. baccatum, typical vine-like growth habit.
Grew tall and graceful branches even in a three-gallon
container. Very productive with ripening spread out over
a long time. Easy to harvest.

PI 1441654 c. preatermissum - PtMD989 via Bhuter via fiogga
Check it out. Last mention of it in my grow log,
   that I can find, anyway.

CAP 1141 c. praetermissum - isolated Brazil CaneDog
Shared a 3-gallon window box type container
with the CGN 22795. Both were very slow to tart
setting pods, and late and slow to ripen. Purple
flower. both had a tremendous growth of branches,
a lot like suckers, which I cut back in the Fall.

CGN 22795 c. praetermissum  - Semillas la Palma
See: CAP 1141. Not as productive as the 1141.
   White flower. Possible OW.

c. cardensaii USDA - Bolivia, CaneDog
One of the best producing wilds, starting early and
ripening up almost every one of the myriad pods.
Pods were a nice size for a wild, probably the
   largest in my grow log.

Rocopica F2 c. cardenasii x unk. Rocoto- Cane Dog seed train
Brown variant, worth a follow-up. Late to ripen,
second only to the Amarillo Chiltepin and c. eximium.
Possible OW. Grow again next year.

No-Shows, all groups. (6):
   c. galapagoense F2 - orig. seed from stc3248 old, terrible-looking seed
Cumari Pollux c. praetermissum  -  Brazil Catch the Bear seed train
   c. lanceolatum 26 chromosome - Central America CaneDog
   c. cardensaii CGN - Bolivia CaneDog
PI 63292201 c. baccatum var. Baccatum -  PtMD989 via Bhuter via fiogga via vladan
   mini brown rocoto - Stettoman/CD

Will update other groups in further posts.

It was great following your Glog Paul, and the recovery you made after battling with aphids earlier in the season. Looking forward to what you'll be growing in 2021...

BTW - that dehydrator has earned a much needed break!

I will have to admit, the little NESCO was
running a few degrees warm   :flamethrower:
at the end

Thanks for being a part of my grow log this
year, HM. Looking forward to your 2021 season,
as well, my friend!

Merry Christmas! Better times ahead!

c. chinense varieties (22):

Bonda Mahala - Yellow 7 x BMJ, Windchicken
Nice work, Gary! A medium sized plant full
of nice yellow pods. Some what I would call 'classic'
Bonda  Ma Jacques and Yellow 7 characteristics,
wide shoulders atop a blocky, tapering tip. Pods 2-3”
   long.

Yellow Nagabrain - Windchicken.
Didn't get to grow this one out. Gave it to a
neighbor because I ran out of spots for it.
   Fortunately, I have more seeds!

Yellow 7 Pot - bpiela
Really great to grow out this one again. Large,
blocky pods and pretty good producer.

KS Lemon Starburst - lespaulde
Small plant, sharing a #20 container with a Fatali,
seed from CaneDog via seed train. Smaller than
golf-ball sized pods, with some nice phenotypes
among the dozen-and-a-half or so pods.

Moruga UV Chocolate - mr. joe
A small plant, but full of pods around golf-ball
size, all of which basically all ripened up in a
short time frame. Some great phenotypes.
All but one pod fully ripened.

Orange BJ Chocolate F4 - orig. from Georgia Growhead
Originally a standard Choco Bhut that threw
large, spade-shaped orange pods in 2019. This
season the pods were orange, but looked more
like the big red JA Habaneros I sometimes grow.
  Glen had the same result.

BJ Brown - showmedasauce
Most productive Chocolate Bhut Jolokia I have
grown. Also the only one to ripen just about all
of its pods in our shorter growing season.

Red Scotch Bonnet - Trident Chili
A very productive and robust plant. Large pods,
off pheno. Several of the largest pods had a small 'tail'.

Papa Dreadie red - Devv, spurious cross
The pod phenotype was all over the place on
this one. Productive plant with lots of pods.

Scotch Bonnet TFM - bpiela, mr. joe, showmedasauce
I can't remember whose seeds I used. The only
bonnet plant to give a pod that was close to a
bonnet shape. The pods were all good sized, but
   there weren't many

Scotch Bonnet Capucino - bpiela
Very productive plant, pods same color as my
7 Pot Pecan. Way off-pheno, looked more like
a peperoccini with lobed, convex blossom ends.
Pods would have ben awesome for anything
   but a bonnet.

Brown Moruga Scorpion - Mr. Joe
Didn't get to grow this one out. Gave it to a
neighbor because I ran out of spots for it.
   Fortunately, I have more seeds!

Trippaul Threat F8  white - Devv
Trippaul Threat F8 yellow
Both produced a multitude of nice creamy white
pods, half of which did not get ripe before season's
end. Still got a lot of pods off both plants, Some nice,
long ones (2.5") and some chunky shorter ones. I think
we can consider this strain of the TT stabilized.

Trippaul Threat v.2 F3
Grew out five of this one. Great results - one yellow,
one peach, one Golden, one red, and one orange,
with a range of purple foliage. BDASPNY, Dragonsfire,
CaneDog, Devv, and rickvm are helping out with this
one next season. Grow next season.

Fatali - CaneDog
Very productive, some nice phenotypes. Still one
I will grow every season. Grow next season.

Fatali SSE
Growdown plant. Very disappointing, small plant.
Pods were awesome, but only got about a dozen
   before season's end.

Purple Thunder F3 (BJh-2 F3 - BJ red x Trippaul Threat F1 or F2)
Spring difficulties really held this one back, so only
got a few pods, but they looked great. Nice, long
Bhut Jolokia shaped pods with some bumpy,
gnarly features and beautiful yellow/caramel pods.
   Grow next season.

Glen in Panama did a great job of growing this
one out to the F6 generation, and sent me seeds
for several  variants. Anything that comes from
Glen's seeds should be named Purple Thunder
   Panama GH, Glen's initials.

Ajicito - Glen
This Panamanian specimen did not really like our
PNW weather. Plant was small, with smallish pods.
No heat variety of habanero. I discovered I don't
really like the habanero taste now that I've tried it
   without heat.

Mojo Blue Ghost - Trident Chilis
Nice jolokia variety with purple-y foliage. Wicked
long (3") skinny red pods covered with bumpy
gnarliness. some of the pods were wrinkly like
elephant skin, especially there thinner cylindrical
   ones.

Yaki Blue Fawn iso 2018 - C-Ddog
Stunning purple plant with huge pods. Unfortunately,
will have to try again next season as hardly any pods
ripened all the way. Grow next season.

Will update baccatums, rocotos and annuums in further posts.

I like that variety. Quite productive and I like the citrus taste. Not superhot, somewhat more than an upper-class habanero and less than Red Savina (according to my taste-buds). Resilient plant as well...

Congrat's on a great season Paul.  You turned a whole lot of challenges into a big success.

Can't wait to see what you do as an encore in 2021!
Thanks, Doc, but I can't take much credit.
Mother Nature and Life Force pretty much
take care of things   ;)

Thanks for the vote of confidence , CD.
No pressure, right?!

I'm enjoying your off-season grow log.
Keep up the good work and see you in 2021!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

Better times ahead!!    :woohoo:

Right, haven't grown that one in a while. When I
grew it out last, both red and yellow variants
came out. Sorry I had to miss the opportunity
for this season.

Happy holidays down Chiapas way, Dieter!
  :metal:

Last post of Round One plant updates...

It's okay if you don't stay awake

pubescens varieties (8):

mini red rocoto - Semillas la Palma
mini yellow rocoto - Semillas la Palma
Both of these were very productive, medium
sized plants. The red variety was juicier and
sweeter, the yellow much easier to pull from
the calyx. Both plants kept ripening pods even
after all the leaves had fallen off.
   Grow next season.

Hyperpube-X yellow F2 - CaneDog
This plant set one pod in the Spring and that was it!

Red Rocoto F4 - descended from Peruvian seed
One of my old standbys, but only had two pods
this year. I think that the Hyperpube X and this
one didn’t get enough sun in their spots.

Ecuador Red - stettoman
Very productive plant, I got over two dozen
   pods from this one.

San Pedro Orange GL - CaneDog
Managed to get six pods from this one after
thinking it would be a bust. Also too much
   shade for this one.

Tatiana Rocoto F5 Yellow -  Select  CaneDog
A tall, rangy productive plant. Lots of nice
   sized yellow spindle shaped pods.
   Grow next season.

XL Brown  - CaneDog
Great plant, tasty brown pods about
the same size as the Peruvian Red.

baccatum (3):
Sugar Rush Cream - Devv
  Very productive typically vine-like baccatum.
Heavily loaded with sweet, mildly hot three
   inch or longer pods.

Sugar Rush Peach - lespaulde
Nice, big pods on this one, too. Also a great
producer. Very sweet pods, great to eat when
   dehydrated to dried fruit consistency.
  Grow next season.

Ajj Benito - lespaulde
Also a great producer. Lots of sweet, fat red pods.
In all the baccatums were one of the best parts of
   My grow this season.

frutescens (1):

Chili Costa Rica - THSC
   Beautiful ornamental with black and
red pods on super dark purple foliage,
   loaded with pods.

Congratulations on a great season Paul. Excellent grow log! I thoroughly enjoyed reading along this year. Most folks start a Glog, but don't keep up with it. You certainly have led by example and have shown how it's done! Shoot, I might think about trying it myself lol.

You grow such a variety each year. Do you ever rank your favorites? Like "what's your #1 favorite from 2020?", "Who's #2", etc. Probably a difficult task, but that would be an interesting read, lol.

Anyway, Happy Holidays to you and yours and I look forward to reading PaulG - 2021!!!!

Thanks, DR! Grow Logs are a bit of a pain, but without them,
I wouldn't remember anything about my grows

I'm not sure I could narrow down to a #1 choice since there are
so many different categories.

My favorites would depend on the category. Ornamentals: Chili
Costa Rica and Black Prince. Superhots: Trippaul Threat and
Purple Thunder, just because. Medium hot: JA Red Habanero,
Yellow Scorpion, Yellow 7, Fatali. Mild peppers: the Sugar Rushes,
especially the Cream variant, have got my attention, so darn tasty.
Then, of course, jalapeños and poblanos.

Not very helpful, I'm sure, but the best I can do  ;)  I'm sure I will
think of a few more as soon as I post this!

Last of the season updates, annuums...

Round Two seeds (12):

Piquillo - Semillas la Palma

Piment de Espelette - Semillas la Palma

Black Prince - THSC

Black Pearl - THSC

Zapotec Jalapeño - Devv

Variegated Jalapeño - catchthebear

Orange Spice Jalapeño - lespaulde

Golden Marconi - F2

Antep Açı Dolma - Stettoman

Yellow Mushroom - Don't Panic, seed train

Padron F2 - original spanish market seed

Haskorea - PtMD989

All in all, this was a mixed season. Spring aphid
and weather woes got everything off to a late
start, and many pods went into the compost bin.
Hard to judge vigor and productivity since things
got off to a rocky start, some of the varieties, like
Yaki Blue Fawn, never had a chance to ripen up
successfully. The nice mid-to-late Summer weather
helped, as well as a nice September and October,
to bring the season to a successful close after all.

Plus, I had too many plants this season

Sorry these seeds didn't grow true.  Did they taste remotely ok?

Nice conclusion to your grow Paul!  I need to start keeping better records as things progress through the season.  If I tried to recap everything, Id have to rely mostly on memory and I don't think that would work out too well!
I enjoyed following along this year and look forward to your upcoming season.  Even if it will be smaller.
Take care and........

Merry Christmas to you and yours.

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas Holiday!

Surely you've learned your lesson and will definitely keep the number of plants to a more manageable level next year...surely.
Oh, yeah. I already have more seed choices for next
season than I can use, so the risk of ‘over-growing’
is high

Don’t apologize, Ben, they were great pods.
I am a lousy judge of chinense taste, my take
ranges from ‘bald-@$$ yuk’ to ‘not unpleasant’.

These were not the former    :D    they sort of
reminded me of the 7 Pot Pecan I have grown
in the past.

Thanks, Señor McDog!

No matter how many I grow, they will all be in
2 or 3 gallon pots, except for some chinenses
in #15 (11.25 gallons) nursery pots.

Okay, gonna try this again since my first posting
lost its edit feature before I could get the update
typed in. Sure hope the new software has a more
relaxed edit timeline.  ;)

2020 Round 2

Piquillo - Semillas la Palma
Very productive, about two dozen pods from a
3-gallon container. Great spicy flavor with little
heat. Best stuffer around. Smallish pods, need
two or three for a meal.* Grow next season.

Piment de Espelette - Semillas la Palma
Really great culinary pepper, right up there with
    Marconi Rosso.*

Black Prince - THSC
Black Pearl - THSC
These ornamental peppers from Hippy Seed
Company are both awesome. Very similar look
with the dark foliage. Prince’s pods look little
C-9 Christmas lights, while the Pearl has round
marbles for pods. Also, the Prince has one erect
pod per node, while the Pearl has clusters of pods.
Both ripen to red, although the Prince’s are a deeper,
    darker hue.

Zapotec Jalapeño - Devv
I think these were crossed. The pods were huge,
almost like Marconi peppers, way too big for
     poppers, more like stuffing peppers.

Variegated Jalapeño - catchthebear
Nice little popper-sized variegated pods on this one.
Decent jalapeño flavor. Plant had mixture of
foliage variegation ranging from pure white to pure
green. The variegation pattern on the leaf at any node
was repeated on the pod that grew from it.
    Grow next season.

Orange Spice Jalapeño - lespaulde
Late start really affected this one, only about a half-
dozen smallish pods late in the season. Nice orange
    color. Grow next season.

Golden Marconi - F2
These are my favorite sweet annuum. The yellows and
Reds taste similar, but the yellow, or ‘golden’ variety
    ripens earlier in the season.*

Antep Açı Dolma - Stettoman
I really liked this sweet stuffer, but the ripening period
was so long I only got a couple of ripe pods. I liked the
Flavor of the red stage better then the green.

Yellow Mushroom - Don't Panic, seed train
Nice pepper, very productive. They don’t develop much
heat in our climate, but flavor is awesome, as it is with
   the red variety.*

Padron F2 - original spanish market seed
   Unfortunately, a no-show this season.

Haskorea - PtMD989
Super productive, lots of very consistent pods, although
smaller at the end. Whole pods dry nicely to a thick wall.
The freshly ground powder is heavenly!*

*All these plants had a triple fork at the stalk crown, so
We’re very productive in their 3-gallon pots.

One hell of a glog,Paul! I was scanning the section that interests me the most, the wilds. One thing I happened to notice in your descriptions was that the the USDA version of C.cardenasii was one of the larger wilds berries you experienced. This could be the result of a cross with  C.pubescens. That species should have pretty small berries. Relatively smaller than a tepin and smaller than most if not all of it's close relative C.eximium.

Be well,amigo!

All in all this was a successful season, but not outstanding.
The early season indoor garage aphids and the ify Spring
weather make it difficult for me to judge some of the new
varieties. Not really fair to them, but the ones that made it
through to good production were tough mudders!

Given this pattern of the past few seasons, I have decided
to postpone my 2021 season start until Feb. 1. I’m hoping
that the plants will get to plant-out with four less weeks in
the 2-liter pots, and be in more of a ‘go’ mode when they
hit the dirt. Plus I am in no way ready to start a grow in
three days   Annuums will go into germinators some-
time between March 1 and March 15.

Guess I should start thinking of a grow list
