Today is 17 November 2014.

Temperature when we got up was 13.3F/-10.39C

Then This Guy showed up on the frozen feeder-

Jumped right up and put out fresh juice for the little one.  About an hour later, he came back and has been sucking down the juice all day.

Temps have been below freezing for a couple weeks and we haven't seen a hummingbird in 2 months.  This happened a couple years ago also.  One lone straggler hung around for 3 days guzzling up the sugar then was gone.  Tomorrow I'll put the feeder out on a plate warmer to keep it and the bird warm.

We had an unusually severe freeze 2 winters ago that just slaughtered the poor hummingbirds.  They still haven't recovered.
I also put out a feeder during cold weather and have even used the plate warmer trick on our rare sub-30 nights. I can only imagine how hungry the poor fellows must be upon awakening after a long, cold night.

Little Guy was on the feeder this morning.  We had to go to work and didn't get home before dark so I don't know how often he hit the juice today.  We'll see in the morning if he's still around.

I love sharing nature with my kids and I especially love it when Nature works with me so when I went out to check my plants and heard a Hoot I was like dang that's close. I turned around and Coda, my Puggle, was looking up. I followed his gaze up and this is what I saw.

So I walked back inside slowly and called the kids over so they could see. By this time he had been joined by his buddy or his mate. Anyways here are the pics I got.

And I guess it was his mate cause she finally had enough of him and

its an HDR filter. lots of cameras and phones have the filter these days, but before the filters you had to take multiple images at different exposures to create an HDR image.
