Pine bark fines

So I know this topic has been covered, but I'm having a hard time finding pine fines. I can get mulch. Is my best bet to just screen the mulch to get the fines?

Did you search far and wide for soil conditioner?  I found it only at an overpriced hydro store, and from a landscaping place.  Landscaping sold it for $6 for a 2cf bag.

Most places I went knew what soil conditioner actually was btw.  If I said pine fines they looked at me like I was speaking Chinese.

Check out Home Depot. Surprisingly they carry a bag of decorative bark mulch. It doesn't say pine, but I'm pretty sure it may be. It does have the smell of pine bark. I would say 90-95 percent is fine as in 1/4 inch. It's good stuff and at 3-4 dollars for 3 cubic feet, that's all I buy. No dyes all natural.

I looked at all the big box stores and one local nursery. I'm going to check a couple more landscaping places. And yeah, I looked floe soil conditioner as well. Worst case scenario I'll just screen some mulch.

I can never find Pine fines either.  I figured it was not available locally.  It seems to be abundant in areas that grow and harvest pine for lumber and paper and have plenty as a byproduct.

Seems they are picky about what areas they sell it. Only the Lowes has it in my area. If they don't carry it see if they'll order it for you. Not sure if those links are just for my area or not???

Walmart = We don't sell this item within 50 miles of you
HD = Not available in your area
Lowes = Curruntley unavailable (6 stores)

I think the Ohio valley is screwed on pine.  6 hrs N and the are paper forests.  6 hrs S and there are lumber forests.  We have mostly hardwoods.  I have looked many times.  LOL everytime I see someone recommend it they are from SE, N great lakes or W coast.

Im telling you.  I had a near impossible time finding it as well.  And I see at least 10 semis stacked to the brim with pine logs every day on my daily commute.  Then one day I magically found it!

try looking for happi gro organic compost = composted pine bark fines

and  you really don't need to be so nazi like about size. screening. too much work for some mix... as long as you are close with the majority of pieces being correct size ur good.

Well I'd have to screen it to get rid of the huge pieces. There was one bag with a hole in it so I stuck my finger in it (lol) and there was a piece that wouldn't even fit in a small cup.

Says out of stock in my area. I agree with the others that it's due to being so far away from the lumber/paper industry. Hardwood mulch is much more abundant here.

Checked with Meijers the other day.  They have a new product that I haven't seen.  It is potting soil with 40-50% composted pine, perlite, sand and topsoil.  It was very dark and looked too dense.  It would need more perlite and maybe some peat but the smell gave me a good feeling of something I could work with.  I will pick some up and experiment.

I ended up just getting pine bark mulch and screening it. It's pretty good sized stuff. Best I could find around here.

5-1-1. Screened fines out then, perilite, peat, and lime. It's my first time making it. It has a pretty good consistency as far as I can tell. It will be ready to use next week after the line has had 2 weeks to do its thang.
