Plants need to sleep

In the world of hydroponics I sometimes see a few folks recommending a 20 on 4 off lighting schedule. Lets put this into perspective, lets say someone keep you awake for 20 hours, you get to rest for 4 hours and then someone comes in and shines a 6400k into your butt hole day after day. Give your plants a good 8 hours of rest.

Sorry, but this is way too big of a subject to make such simplistic statements.

There are so many approaches to photoperiodism - not the least of which, is asymmetrical cycling. (schedules not based on a 24 hour period of time) Additionally, some plants REQUIRE a minimum period of dark, others require none at all.

^This -- which is why some plants grow and produce best near the equator where the light cycle remains stable and others do better nearer the poles where the light cycle fluctuates on a seasonal timeline as the pole leans toward/away from the sun making the daily light cycle longer/shorter.
