Red Rocoto

Is red rocoto and red manzano the same pepper? I was thinking they were. The red rocoto
is the one I will be attempting to grow this year.

Rocoto is a common name for the Capsicum pubescens species. Manzano is a name given to varieties grown in mexico that are shaped like an apple. The word Manzano translates to apple.

Do you have a particular seed source in mind?

Thank you for asking this question! I had this question in the back of my mind for a little while myself. I have various Rocoto seeds, and I have three different Manzano seeds (red, orange and yellow). So, I just did a bit of research.

On the Chili Database at thechiliman.org, the Manzano varieties are listed as cousins of the Rocoto. http://www.thechilem...y&submit=Search

However, that same Chili Database lists the Rocoto (red, orange and canario aka yellow) as also being called 'Manzano' in Peru. http://www.thechileman.org/results.php?chile=1&find=rocoto&heat=Any&origin=Any&genus=Any&submit=Search

Rocotos are found in Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia (where it is called Locoto). Manzanos are found in Mexico.

Since I'm growing both Rocotos and Manzanos this year, I guess I'll discover myself if they really are that different. I just hope the Arizona heat doesn't affect them this summer.
