I've always been a sci-fi geek. I think Stargate was the best overall TV universe - SG-1 and Atlantis were both awesome along with their wrap-up direct-to-dvd movies. SGU took everything in a darker, dramatic direction and lost me for the most part.
Babylon 5 was pretty good, assorted Star Treks were good (I enjoyed the "temporal cold war" concept in "Enterprise")
bookwise, I believe the single most fun read ever is Larry Niven's Ringworld series! If you're a sci-fan and haven't read those books, add 'em to your list!
Moviewise, I watch very little of anything anymore, but always liked the dystopian stuff. There's been no shortage of titles over the past 20 years but nothing I really thought was that great recently. Feels like every movie from the past several years is so pumped full of political zeitgeist that the story takes a backseat to the social agenda. I don't know why every movie requires interracial-homosexual sex and "strong female" leads. I just don't see how it matters to the storyline of fighting aliens/robots/shape-shifting-vampires... I can't identify with the new heroes they want to push.
