glog Scottish 2025 Superhot trial begins !

Hi Guy's

The madness has begun again ! ðŸĪŠ 😜😗

My 2024 superhot chilli trial turned out far from ideal trying to find superhots I like but most importantly will thrive in my particular micro climate (my wee Scottish greenhouse)

Firstly 2024 weather was rubbish little sun alot of cloud and temperatures much lower than previous year's 🙁 and let's face it "Scottish sumers" often cool and wet for long periods at best !

Add to the above by a number of mistakes by me 🙄

Such as leaving my horticultural bubble wrap on for most of the season, I'm sure it exacerbated into the natural poor light levels of 2024

Then my lack of seed continuity labelling :banghead: which lead to my culling my only Dorset Naga :seeya:
And a "gigantic" Scotch brains yellow f6 which i hadn't intended.

Then once I'd hardened off my young plant's and moved them out to the unheated greenhouse cardboard underneath and horticultural fleece on top February/March, this in itself is not a problem I've been amazed how they will tolerate such low temperatures 🙂 however..........................potting up too soon into final pots be it 5 litre or 10 litre or bigger rather than slowly potting up one size at a time proved catastrophic when this coincides with temperatures dropping from 10 oC plus to 3oC for the next two or three weeks ! I lost a few varieties that never recovered and really upset the others infact emergency 'down potting " saved the day.

Sowing in November. ðŸĪ”..........personally I think for me in my situation it means I ran out of "spareroom" too soon forcing the earlier hardening off although it would have been ok if I hadn't made the mistake of potting up into cold wet soil. How ever I've started a month later this season.

Only other mistakes I can think of is moving trial varieties from mini kratky 500ml -800 ml to 5 litre ! 😎 the resulting increase in size is spectacular but unwanted if your short on greenhouse space !

Likewise other trial varieties in soil moving from 5 litre pot to 18 litre pot big mistake ! You loose a lot of space and often end up either with loads of pod's you don't really like of enjoy ðŸŦĪ or a large plant that doesn't produce well in your situation. Another issue is you can only keep a single specimen of each variety big mistake !

Reckon I've pretty much laid bare all my mistakes and cock ups of 2024 ........now hopefully I'll learn from them ðŸĪžand hopefully anyone reading this won't repeat them 🙂

I think the urge to pot up either too early or too big is driven firstly by the idea of getting them settled in there final pots quicker and less root disturbance and secondly by greed ðŸŦĢ the what if I grow a small specimen only to find I adore the flavour and heat 😋 but now only have a handful of pod's and have to wait another year to grow it again ! ðŸ˜Ŧ with hind site I think this is kind of the way it has to be when growing in limited space they do say greed is a sin and patience a virtue 🙂

This glog appears to have turned into a review of 2024 which is perhaps not a bad thing............. my discovery of 2024 was Reaper x Moruga f5 from whitehot peppers 😋😋😋 a new favourite delicious !

Now back to my 2025 Scottish superhot trial you will notice I don't list sowing too many varieties as a mistake as I allows you options you won't have if you hadn't sown them. The only issue's are space or rather lack of it ðŸĪĢ the other having the self control to cull varieties as they show themselves to be weak, slow or not thriving. They are the easy ones it's culling the strong healthy specimens purely based on space that's hard 😗

For 2025 I trying to stick to a plan.......firstly sown a month later 👍

Keep trial plant's in mini kratky or if in soil 3 litre or 5 litre pot's MAX ! And hopefully multiples rather than single specimens.

No bubble wrap cardboard below and fleece on top early in the season is enough and more light

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_11294.jpg

15 cell seed tray with commercial seed mix x6 seeds sown in each cell and topped with vermiculite, next day I realised I missed a variety......so added another 3 cells to the propergater.

Hopefully all labelled correctly this time I can't see how there could have been any mistakes this time.

Beautiful plants, will definitely keep following your grow this year.
I also find it a little bit amusing that you're doing the exact opposite of me. I have my trial plants in hydro and my "main" plants in soil

Hi Guy's

Did a bit of potting up today.............

Purple Death from 9cm to 11cm this pepper is Gorgeous 😍

Black Naga 9cm to 11cm

Dragons Breath x2 7cm pots to 9cm

Dorset Naga Orange 7cm to 9cm

Dorset Naga Orange 7cm to 3" Net pot converted to Kratky

The latter two I've turned into an impromptu experiment ðŸĪ“

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_11850.jpg

These two Dorset naga orange are the same age and were both in 7cm pots this morning now 9cm and second now in a 3" net and jar Kratky set up I plan on only keeping one specimen to maturity but for now I thought it could be interesting to compare the growth for a while...............

Hi Guy's

Weather's been very kind to me this March only 5 day's dipped below zero oC and my horticultural fleece has prevented any damage 🙂

We're had alot more sun this March compared to 2024  hopefully a sign of the season to come.

Most of my chillies and even my tomatoes have been out in the greenhouse for a month or so now ............

Most have forked and started to bud ive been removing the buds.......

Did an Inventory yesterday:

Dorset naga 3" net pot 5 litre kratky
Dorset naga 5.5" net pot 5 litre kratky (experiment 3"vs 5.5") ðŸĪ”
Bengle naga 3" net pot 5 litre kratky
Reaper x Moruga f5 3" net pot 5 kratky
Fatalii gourmet jigsaw 3" net pot 5 litre kratky
Purple Death 2" net pot 1.6 litre kratky
Reaper x Moruga f5 2" net pot 1.6 litre kratky
Scotch brains yellow f7 2" net pot 1.6 litre kratky
Zimbabwe bird chilli 3" net pot 5 litre kratky
Tiberius mauler red 3 litre soil ======cull ?? (very tall plant)
Peach ghost jami 3 litre soil
Gator Jigsaw 3 litre soil
Reaper Equis 3 litre soil
Zing 3 litre soil
Hurtberry 3 litre soil
Chocolate Scotch bonnet 3 litre soil =======cull ?? (plenty in freezer)
Purple Death 2 litre soil
Wiri wiri 1 litre soil=======cull ?? (Not very hot)
Black naga 1 litre soil ======cull ?? ( Small plant)
Dragons breath 1 litre soil
Dorset naga orange 1 litre soil=====cull ?? (keep kratky one)
Dorset naga orange 3" net pot 600ml kratky
Over wintered 7 Pot Barrackpore 2 litre soil =====cull ?? ( experiment -wasn't Impressed with it last year)

The plant's currently listed as cull ?? May or may not be but by cull mostly given away we're possible.

Given my objective this season is to finalise my favourite Red superhots the Peach ghost might be on a shaky nail ðŸĪĢ😗 but it's growing like a weed !!

However given the limited greenhouse space i "WILL" have to cull hard but hopefully the 3 litre pots will help me "squeeze " more in ðŸĪžðŸŦĢðŸĪĢðŸĪĢðŸĪĢ

Hi Guy's

We gave been blessed with clear sky and lots sunshine so far this season 😎 Everything is out in the unheated greenhouse and has been for probably a couple of months ! Currently greenhouse night temps are 4oC to 7oC and daytime temps 25oC to 28oC 🙂

Today my update will only cover superhots I've got in kratky hydroponics mostly favourites or in the case of Purple death just a hope it will taste as good as it look ðŸĪž

Also I've a wee net pot experiment on the go two Dorset Naga one in 3" net pot the other in 5.5" net pot ................will it make any difference ðŸĪ” well I shall find out 😎

My second Reaper x Moruga f5 in a 1.6L food container

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12006.jpg

Purple Death in 1.6L kratky for some reason I adore this plant and have high hope's ðŸĪžI've a second Purple death in soil too 🙂

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_11998.jpg

One of my two Dorset Naga Orange this fella was converted to kratky the other is in soil I've just moved this one from under the LED grow light it's abit dropy with last nights 6oC hope it forgives me ðŸĪĢ

Any of these can of course be moved a larger container if required 👍

All my trial varieties are now in their final 3 litre pots of soil except for two later sown plants.

Hi Guy's

Here's my Potted plant's in 3L pots which I'm planning to be their final pots to keep them small, force early fruiting and fit them in ðŸĪž

The date's on each is when they were sown.

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12029.jpg

Tiberius mauler red I grew one last season very late and ran out of year so no fruit but .....it was identical as in very tall compared to all the other's varites that are very much shorter. Don't know if anyone else has found this ? It's been shedding it's larger leaves this week in the full sun high 20's oC

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12028.jpg

The Peach ghost seems a robust little fella

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12027.jpg

The Gator Jigsaw seems abit more fragile......

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12026.jpg

The Hurtberry is a beast ! High hope's for this fella

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12031.jpg

Reaper Equis not as vigorous as the Hurtberry but I've still high hope's

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12030.jpg

Zing again not as robust but high hope's

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12032.jpg

Purple Death in a 2 litre pot but ready to get Potted up next couple of days personally I find this plant Gorgeous and hope the fruit live up to my expectations!

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12034.jpg

Later sown Dragons breath in a 1 litre pot from what I've season far I think sowing start of January is about perfect.

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12025.jpg

Again the later sown Dorset naga orange is is far behind the earlier sown plants

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12033.jpg

Not a surper hot but an interesting distraction Raj's Wiri wiri should be fun !

I also have a Scotch bonnet chocolate and a small Scotch brains yellow f7 the later I just want seed the the bonnet I know I love so may give away if I/when I start running out of space.

As the plant's progress I will certainly have to cull only keeping the most promising varieties due to space.

Hi Guy's

The notion came apon me today to record the current number of Fully Formed Forks "Y"'s on each of my plant's in case the information could prove useful in the future.

Bengle naga 20 litre kratky x 8
Fatalii gourmet jigsaw 15 litre kratky x 3
Fatalii gourmet jigsaw jar kratky x 3
Reaper x Moruga 20 litre kratky x 4
Reaper x Moruga 1.6 litre kratky x 3
Peach ghost jami 3 litre soil x 4 plus buds "about to open"
Zing 3 litre soil x 7
Reaper Equis litre soil x 3
Tiberius mauler 3 litre x 5
Hurtberry 3 litre soil x 3
Gator Jigsaw 3 litre soil x 1
Purple death 3 litre soil x 0
Purple death 1.6 litre kratky x 1

Dorset naga orange, Dragons breath, have none but are much younger...........

However my Dorset naga are Approx a 20 days younger than the main list above

Dorset naga 3 " net pot 5 litre kratky x 3 plus one open flower !
Dorset naga 5.5" net pot 20 litre kratky x 4 plus two open flower's !

The first green fly of the season were dispatched this afternoon found on a small Rocoto CAP 363 ! ðŸ˜ģ all other plants were inspected and no others seen .......time to mix up the neem oil ............

We been having much better weather than 2024 lot's of sun and blue sky's 🙂

Hi Guy's

A little update on my soil trial plant's slight change of plan ended up repotting to 5 litre pots partly due to the improved weather this season and 3 litre pots drying out quicker.

At present I can fit all plant's in the greenhouse as they get bigger and more obvious which are showing the greatest potential there will probably be some culling although I will give any thing away I can or simply try it outdoors........Last year I moved a large kratky Ring of fire outside the greenhouse duecto lack of space ......I was really surprised how well it did and continued producing chillies very late into the season even outside.

My slightly staggered sowing date's more from indecision than cunning plan show I can start later than I thought but end of January probably too late for me.

Also kratky hydroponics clearly pays dividends and is alot cleaner less work than soil.

Hi Guy's

I have the first pods on two Superhot varieties...........🙂

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12329.jpg

I was not surprised at all to see the Peach ghost jami start producing pods first kind of expected it 😁 from what I've heard about the variety.

However the second is a complete surprise ! ðŸ˜ģ

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12330.jpg

Purple death ! ðŸ˜ģðŸ˜ģ not complaining ðŸĪĢ but certainly didn't expect it I have two Purple death plant's one in 5 litres of soil and this litte fella in 1.6 litre kratky !
It's a variety I had high hope's for as it looked gorgeous from photos I've seen and it should pack a punch and hopefully taste good too ðŸĪž

My Dorset naga, Bengle naga, Reaper x Moruga plant's are huge compared and all have a gazillion flowers but not pods yet.......

Goes to show....................you need to grow these things out and see what happens in your individual micro climate.

I'm still finding sporadic green fly here and there on the odd plant and often only aon a few leaves. I'm crushing them as discovered daily seems to be working also I've seen tons of very small spider's 👍🙂 spiders are always welcome in my house of greenhouse.

Hi Guy's

Our weather has taken a turn ! Outside lows of 7 oC / 44.6 oF at night and day time highs of 14 oC / 57.2 oF and heavy, heavy rain showers and high winds ! My outdoor Rocotos are taken a beating ! But seem to be surviving.

Luckily my superhots are in the greenhouse light levels have been good lots of sun even with the current heavy rains we are getting showers and plenty of sunshine 😁 currently in the greenhouse I've pods on Peach ghost jami, Purple death, Dorset naga, Fatalli gourmet Jigsaw, Zimbabwe bird chilli, Scotch brains yellow f8, everything else is in flower now awaiting pods ! except for Gator Jigsaw which seems much much slower/ retarded compared to the other superhots.

I'm completely in love 😍 with my two Purple death plant's they are soooooo pretty ! I'm just praying they taste as good as they look 🙏

To be honest I'm very impressed with the Peach ghost jami and again i hope it tastes good !

I'm abit disappointed with the Reaper Equis it seems to have few flowers compared to the other superhots Zing is probably a close second regarding fewer flowers.

I'm tempted to "cull" a few varieties that are "obviously" much much slower than other superhots simply to free up space.

Hi Guy's

"Pods in da house 😁 the Greenhouse 😎

We have been blessed with more Sun earlier in the season than in 2024 and things are finally happening in my wee Scottish greenhouse even in its far from ideal location in my garden. But it's what I have to work with.

This season i have a mixture of soil mainly 5 litre for my "trial" varieties and kratky hydroponics for favourites or small kratky for seed production or to keep an "extra" specimen of a favoured variety.

This combination or soil and hydroponic has lead me already to the conclusion in future in my Wee Scottish greenhouse hydroponics us the way forward be it mini kratky i.e 500ml to 1.6 litre for trial varieties or larger kratky hydroponics (5 Litre to 20 litre) for favourites.

Anyway back to the pods 😎ðŸĨ°

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12425.jpg

First Peach ghost jami - seeds from Justin at White hot peppers it's a beast ! In 5 litre of soil it's way, way ahead of any other soil the first to produce fruit be it soil or hydroponic ! ðŸ˜ģ makes me wonder what the hell it would have done in a hydroponic set up ! I'm extremely impressed by this variety obviously I haven't eaten/ tried it yet ?

Can anyone comment on flavour and heat ? Apparently it's ment to be hotter than the Red ghost ?? Hopefully it taste's good ? but it's really impressive at present 😎

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12426.jpg

Purple Death 😍ðŸĨ°ðŸ˜˜ did I mention I'm completely in love with this variety 7 Pot Primo x Purple ghost........this specimen was in a 1.6 litre kratky set up but today I've changed all my fruiting kratky to a fruiting solution mixture and I've taken the opportunity to move this beauty to a 5 litre container 😎 it will slow it down as it will now produce more roots in the extra space but hopefully I will get more fruit ðŸĪž
I have a second specimen of Purple Death in 5 litres of soil it's currently in flower no pod's this is a good example of comparing apples with apples 👍The kratky hydroponic specimen is "way" ahead of it's soil sibling.

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12424.jpg
Fatalii gourmet jigsaw I have two this one in 5 litre Kratky and a second in 15 litre kratky the later has no pod's yet due ti the extra root room. I've grown this variety before the heat is excellent and I enjoy the flavour but I've never found it "prolific " or " vigorous " given its a Trinidad Moruga scorpion "cross" I wonder how Mr Fatalii managed to produce such feeble/ slow variety........ðŸĪ” don't get me wrong I like the flavour 😋and heat ðŸ”Ĩ but the Reaper x Moruga F5/6 from Justin at White hot peppers is a real "beast" strong, vigorous, rampant compared to the Fatalii gourmet plus it's extremely hot and sweet and very fruity flavour 😋

Saying that ............😚 this season I have two I've two Reaper x Moruga F5/6 from Justin at White hot peppers one in one in 5 litre kratky and a second in 20 litre kratky and despite a gazillion flowers no pods yet but any day ..........ðŸĪž

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12423.jpg

Dorset Naga ðŸĨ°ðŸ˜ truely a "gem" 😋 prolific, a selection by those guys at Seaspring seeds from the bog standard Naga Morich 😎👍

This is my 20 litre Kratky Dorset in a 5.5" net pot interestingly my second Dorset naga in a 3" Net pot and 5 litre kratky has no fruit yet which I find interesting......I'd expected the opposite........maybe there's something in the larger net pot ? ðŸĪ”

Whilst I love the Trinidad Moruga scorpion red is a reliable favourite I think the Dorset Naga is my current go to / Death row Superhot 😁😅

I'm not growing the Trinidad Moruga scorpion red this season as I've loads in the freezer 😎 I'm wondering what it would do grown in kratky 😎

I am planned Mon growing the Trinidad Moruga scorpion yellow next season.......heard good things ðŸĪ”

0a113318-b41a-4aa4-8695-0d0bb04efaa3-1_all_12422.jpg

Not a Superhot but I'm very impressed with the Zimbabwe bird chilli its in a 5 litre Kratky set up it's like a huge green Afrom😁 😎 compact, prolific, more pids than i can count !! Apparently they pack a good punch for their size ! ðŸĪžðŸĪ”

The Reaper Equis has the least flowers compared to the other superhots hots and the Tiberius mauler red has "Just" had it's "first" flower open ! ðŸ˜ē

All the other Superhot trials in 5 litre soil are covered in flower's Hurtberry, Dragons breath (younger) Zing, except the Gator Jigsaw which seems the most retarded or slowest of them all ........?

I can see some culling happening soon to maximise viable/promising varieties.....
