Scuba_Steve's 2019 Glog

I will try to keep this updated better this year!

I have a ton of plants still alive outside. I just pulled about a half gallon of pods today. I haven't decided if I am going to pull them all, or find more room (that i dont have) to plant. I would have to start going 3-4 plants deep!

Anyways on to this years seedlings.

I starting with 4 seed flats. Shelf is lined with black/white plastic sheeting. I plan on opening it up some if heat gets excessive once the new light comes in.

Lights will be a Hydrofarm 4x54w T5 fixture, and I will be adding 2 ocsillating fans as well. Heat mat is on a thermostat, which the lights will be on afterwards to avoid an extreme overheat.

All seeds without parenthesis are from Whitehotpepper.com

Its my biggest fear, especially with 4 bulbs. I didn't like any led fixtures without spending a ton! T-5 is powerful as hell, but hot. I may run it with 2 bulb as well. It is overpowered for my needs, but I would rather buy once.

I love the T5 fixtures.  I have two 4-foot T5's (a 4 and a 6 bulb) and what really works well for me is using the 6 as a 4 by turning off the middle two lights.  The center still gets plenty of light intensity from the sides and reflector - I'm fruiting (short) plants under that setup right now - and it lights a really big footprint.  I think when it's time to grow seedlings for this summer season I'll try what you suggest and remove the middle two bulbs from my4 bulb T5 and see how that works. I think it will be more than enough light and reduce heat and energy consumption.

BTW - I just got my first LED (an HLG100 for xmas) and even though that gives me an advantage over the T5's in terms of deeper light penetration, I sure wouldn't trade in my T5's for LED's.  They're just too versatile.

Who has cooked seedlings w/ T5's?

<< This guy

I lost about 150 seedlings give or take, when I got stupid and turned my 4' 8 bulb T5's on full blast.

Replanted, no biggie, but annoying to make a stupid mistake so early on. Hopefully be my last mistake for a while?

Yep, lots of seedlings popping up now! Im just hoping that some of the varieties with 0 will start popping.

I know with my 4 bulb setup, I consume/evap around 4-6 cups per tray every day. 48 hours and I go from excess standing water to bone dry. Gotta be careful and diligent! Im sure your grow will go smoothly now.

On Feb 14th, I started my 2nd round. It contains 24 of the following, all from Burbee:

Jalapeno Early
Jalapeno Gigantica
Tequila Sunrise
Crispy Hybrid Bell
California Wonder 300 TMR Bell
Sunbright Bell

Tomatoes:
Rutgers
Better Boy Hybrid (22 seeds)
Sweetie (26 seeds)
Yellow Pear
Gardener's Delight
Roma VF

Around the same time period, after a heavy watering I lost track of exactly how fast they are now consuming. This took 2 days to happen while away from town.

What a difference a few weeks makes!

I slightly potted up just after my last post (only time planned).

They exploded!

The trays are Bootstrap Farmer's 50 cell. I must say, these are some well built trays! Should last years.
